Thoughts on the name Romy

Abstractporridge · 22/06/2019 19:45

After whittling down from a short list of 4 (also posted) I think I’ve found my baby name. It’s a little bit quirky and don’t think we’ll be coming across many others but it isn’t too unusual/strange.

Keen to to do a test run and hear people’s thoughts - both good and bad - to push me into making my final decision.

The name is Romy (pronounced Ro-me not Rom-e)

There is no need to suggest Romilly as an alternative as it doesn’t work for us

Thanks in advance!

I also think it's very nothing-y. Sounds like it's short for something but presumably isn't.

mintich · 23/06/2019 07:15

Romy and Michelle! Therefore I love it

It's a bit of a nothing name. Nicknamey and forgettable.

smashamasha · 22/06/2019 23:35

@Abstractporridge

I live in a remote rural place and have met 2 other Romy's under 5.

My eldest daughter has a beautiful name which went from off the top 100 to within the top 5 from birth to age 7. I'm fearing the same thing again - I'm such a trendsetter Smile

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 22/06/2019 23:34

An old school friend of mine named her daughter Romy and I know it was because of the film...

smashamasha · 22/06/2019 23:32

Am secretly hoping my Romy is one of the ones you guys say are fabulous!

Sometimes people say Rom-ee and sometimes Rumi but usually people get it right. Really not an issue if they don't, I just correct them!

Mainly I just get lots of compliments on the name. I adore it and it really suits her.

AesopsMables · 22/06/2019 23:02

My favourite name, I am biased though Wink

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 22/06/2019 22:51

Isn't Remy a boys name?

It’s Thirteen on House’s real name.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteen_(House)

Never knew it was originally a boys name.....

Still like it!

mamaoffourdc · 22/06/2019 22:43

Love it - know a lovely young lady with name - go for it

ForeignBodies · 22/06/2019 22:39

Very nice.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 22/06/2019 22:38

Like it! Know one whose full name is Romina.

AverageMummy · 22/06/2019 22:37

Isn’t Remy something you take for indigestion?
Anyway I quite like Romy although it’s not my style

Shadow1234 · 22/06/2019 22:31

My daughters friend has this name -( my favourite girls name, love it).

Abstractporridge · 22/06/2019 22:26

@smashamasha have you had any issues with how her name is pronounced? From spelling am thinking people may call her Rom-e (like Tommy) although don’t see this as a huge deal.

Oflawrence · 22/06/2019 22:01

I know a Romy and she is a fabulous kid

Abstractporridge · 22/06/2019 21:59

@smashamasha excellent choice!

That is interesting as I have only come across the one so far and thought it was pretty unusual so far!

I have heard the name Remy being used more and more but for boys not girls.

OP posts:
smashamasha · 22/06/2019 21:54

And Remy is a French/Nigerian boys name but quite a few girls being called it now.

Cornishmum00 · 22/06/2019 21:54

I like it, also know a Romani which i think is lovely and could be shortened as nn

smashamasha · 22/06/2019 21:53

All I can say is - if you like it, and it's individuality - don't ask about it on Mumsnet!!

I've got a Romy, she's 3 and I'm watching the popularity sky rocket!

Abstractporridge · 22/06/2019 21:51

@NellWilsonsWhiteHair

Agreed it doesn’t seem to be attached to a certain class/location which is another reason that we like it. I’ve also only come across one so far (parents were creative types)

@Eaudear
Thanks for feedback. I agree it’s a bit nicknamey but that doesn’t bother us. There is such huge diversity in names these days (where I live this includes many from different cultures) that I just don’t think it’s an important factor.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 22/06/2019 21:12

I don’t dislike it. Have only met one - a girl at my DS’ nursery, would be 7 now. London middle class, fwiw, but I think it’s an unusual enough name that it doesn’t seem strongly attached to any particular location or class iyswim.

Eaudear · 22/06/2019 21:08

Yes, I love Romy, I think I considered for DD at one point. It does feel a bit nicknamey, like it should be short for a longer name but I wouldn't worry to much about that.

Quite like it but really really like Remy.

Isn't Remy a boys name?

Abstractporridge · 22/06/2019 21:03

@Paisley2018 because if I like it regardless of negative feedback then I know it’s the one
