Boys names - Lochran, Garrett, Campbell

Hi Everyone,
So I'm 37 weeks pregnant and myself and DH are struggling with boys names! We have an older daughter called Arabella and the names we have narrowed it down to are:

  • Lochran
  • Campbell
  • Garrett

My mother and her side of the family are Scottish. Husband's family is English. What do you think of these names? Wanted to sound the out before sharing thoughts with our families!

Lochran. Campbell just makes me think of the soup.

MotherofaCat · 22/06/2019 00:48

Campbell is my favourite followed by Lochlan rather than lochran as it doesnt right to me ( I'm also Scottish)

Divgirl2 · 21/06/2019 23:29

I'm Scottish, lived in England, have English family.
No one will be able to pronounce Lochran, it's a beautiful word when said properly. I think it sounds ugly when butchered (additionally I think a lot of people will think it's a mistake and you meant Lorcan).
Campbell is too surname-y for me but that's a personal thing. I also think this "goes" with your daughter's name the least.
The third was... Garrett? It's fine, very American though which isn't my style, again comes down to personal taste.

If you want an unusual Scottish name that isn't really a name why not go for Harris (that's an island), Angus (that's an area), Hamilton (it's not a very nice town but it's an okay name), Bracken (it's a plant), Sorley (this one might actually be a name...I'm unsure of its origins).

villamariavintrapp · 20/06/2019 23:12

Garrett makes me think of garrotte.

BigGlasses · 20/06/2019 23:01

Garret is a type of attic is it not? I have never met anyone called Garret, but have met a Garnet ( he was nice).
Lochran i’ve never heard of either. Lachlan/Lochlan I know a few.
Campbell I love. Cam or Cammie is a great shortening. I have a great uncle Campbell and an uncle Cammie ( but he is Cameron) so it’s a great name for me

onefatblackcat · 20/06/2019 21:54

Campbell is a great name. Not sure about the other two although I do like Lorcan

Bezalelle · 20/06/2019 18:57

Lochran sounds like a sort of bodily mucus.

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 20/06/2019 18:50

Lorcan? It’s an Irish name but pronounced phonetically. Similar sound to Lochlan.

Interestingly the only Garrett I’ve ever met has the surname Campbell!

Octonautstotherescue · 20/06/2019 18:46

Campbell comes from the gaelic for crooked mouth...the Campbell clan historically don't have a very good reputation in areas of the highlands! it's surprising how much of a grudge is still held. Especially with the Macdonald clan...but If you don't plan to live there then all good!

MsMax1 · 20/06/2019 18:33

Well lots of interesting views - thanks. Think all our 3 choices are a bit like marmite but think that’s always the way when you go for something a little bit different. Should have also said that I’m a teacher (have been for over 16 years!) so loads of names already have associations for me 😄 hence looking for something that is a bit different but not too out there! @hellotoyellow
I have a second (or is it third?!) cousin called Campbell so think the Scottish family would go all good with than name. I imagine it will get shortened to Cam.

@HoratioNightboy
Oh I hadn’t looked at alternative spellings - something to think about!

MsMax1 · 20/06/2019 18:24

@Justmuddlingalong Agreed - one side of the family will like one of the names and the other will like a different one! 😄

@ineedtogotobedanyway
It is a Gaelic surname rather than a first name - more on the Irish side I think.
Not a massive fan of Lochlan or Lachlan - I think it is the softer sounding ending I’m not so keen on.

Yes I did think Garrett might be mistaken for Gareth.
Thanks

Love Campbell

Owlbert · 20/06/2019 12:58

Arabella is beautiful and definitely a 'first name' your boys names are all surnames and don't feel like they go to me.

HoratioNightboy · 20/06/2019 12:34

I like Lochran best, but it looks like others might mistake it for Lochlan or Lachlan.

There is also a Lochrin spelling, which has a different origin to Lochran but sounds the same, and may cause less confusion. Both spellings, as well as Lochryn, have been used in Scotland, albeit rarely.

Not keen on Garrett, Campbell is OK.

CassianAndor · 20/06/2019 09:35

Garrett

Campbell I'm not keen on and Lochran looks like a mistake. Lachlan?

BlueMerchant · 20/06/2019 09:01

Not keen but think I prefer Garrett.

celtiethree · 20/06/2019 08:58

Lochran or Campbell - of those two Campbell. Both are great names.

LisaLane · 20/06/2019 08:55

Lochran in Scottish Gaelic means lantern. There's a Gàidhlig arts body with the name An Lòchran based in Glasgow.

hellotoyellow · 20/06/2019 08:48

Never heard of lochran (am Scottish). Love Lochlan but discounted it as English pronunciation so wrong - Lock-lan. I know a Campbell in his 50s, it's hard to shorten if you're keen for that?

Twooter · 20/06/2019 08:42

Never heard of Lochran either. Personally would prefer Lachlan

Justmuddlingalong · 20/06/2019 08:39

Don't share thoughts with the family! Not everyone will like whichever name you pick, so don't give them the opportunity to put you off. Lochran's my favourite. But the ch sound might be more of a ck with an English accent.
