Greta

Is Greta a nice name? Would it seem odd on a child with no European links?
I just think it has such a cool, vintage vibe and I like Ettie for a nickname. I also am liking Ada at the moment, which is perhaps a bit more in keeping with current trends.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

If you went down the long name on Birth Cert route, you could choose Marghareta instead of Margaret if it’s not your cup of tea. But I think Greta does work on its own and I am not usually keen on registering diminutives as full names.

PicnicAtHangingRock · 16/06/2019 14:57

I like Greta and I think it’s much, much better than Ada. You should go for it.

notacooldad · 16/06/2019 14:47

That was going to be my choice if I had a girl. I had two boys instead!!

AverageMummy · 16/06/2019 14:46

Greta is nice but Margaret is awful. I hate nicknames used as full names but really don’t think Greta sounds like a nickname.
If you did feel you needed a longer then Georgette, Gregoria & Allegra are all better than Thatcher Margaret

I know a Greta with an Irish surname and she is a very smart vegan architect who is just a very cool person, she is all woke and has the best dress sense so in my mind the name Greta is fantastic cos I totally associate it with a persona like hers.
I love it

Shelbybear · 16/06/2019 14:18

I think Ada is quite nice but Greta I really don't like, sorry.

CronesRule · 16/06/2019 14:17

Not keen on Ada, but love Greta.

Clownfish123 · 16/06/2019 14:13

Surprised by how popular it is! Good to hear Smile
I think I'm prefering it to Ada. I really like Ada but I'm worried about it merging into all the Ava Eva Evie names.

Love it, was a strong contender for us

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 16/06/2019 12:59

Argh put double t'sBlush

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 16/06/2019 12:57

Prefer Grettel but Gretta is lovely also

GreenTulips · 16/06/2019 12:41

It was on my short list - DH wasn’t keen

DramaAlpaca · 16/06/2019 12:40

A few years ago I'd have said I hated Greta but it's grown on me recently. It works fine as a name in its own right rather than a diminutive.

I can see Greta going really well with a short Irish surname - it sounds great with mine Grin

SundayMorningSun · 16/06/2019 12:37

Nice!

I had an Aunty Gret, she was a Margaretta, I think.

Frazzled2207 · 16/06/2019 12:31

I think Thunberg but IMO definitely a positive connotation

haverhill · 16/06/2019 11:08

I’ve taught a couple, both intelligent and very pleasant girls! I like it.

canislupis · 16/06/2019 11:06

I’ve never asked her tbh, she’s 7. She likes that it’s an anagram of great! I like that it’s a classic non-frilly name.I think it’s top 20 in Italy! We are thoroughly British & have a two syllable Scottish surname... I don’t think people think of it as connected to Margaret, at least they don’t mention that.

Peachbubble · 16/06/2019 11:02

I like it, much more than Ada

Clownfish123 · 16/06/2019 11:00

Waxonfeckoff - I know what you mean and I do generally like full names on birth certificates (Harriet for Hattie, Charlotte for Lottie etc) but I'm really not keen on Margaret and think Greta is strong enough to stand alone. I do agree that generally it's nice to have options though.

@canislupis - Does your dd like her name? Do you generally get positive reactions? I would love to meet a little Greta!
Gretta Ray is a singer I saw perform recently and she was amazing, gave me the idea for the name.

Love it

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/06/2019 10:54

Greta is generally short for Margaret but I think it can stand alone perfectly well. I like it but personally I'd have Margaret known as Greta as that gives loads of future options. I have a boring name with very little options so I'm clearly biased.

SophyStantonLacy · 16/06/2019 10:52

Greta Thunberg will no doubt have increased its recognition.

canislupis · 16/06/2019 10:52

I have a Greta. We have only ever met a teenage one although a friend of a friend had one recently. I think it might be a marmite name!

MollyHuaCha · 16/06/2019 10:49

Lovely
