Greta

Is Greta a nice name? Would it seem odd on a child with no European links?
I just think it has such a cool, vintage vibe and I like Ettie for a nickname. I also am liking Ada at the moment, which is perhaps a bit more in keeping with current trends.

She is likely to have light blonde ringlets if DS is anything to to by, if that sways anyone

I don't know any siblings where 1st and 2nd child have the same colouring/hair type (although obviously in some racial backgrounds there will perhaps be a little less variety and more subtle differences than in the general gene soup of the uk/europe). Identical twins excepted! :o

Camomila · 17/06/2019 21:25

I like it a lot.
I have a little cousin Greta in Italy, she's 6 or 7. Margherita is a family name with the younger generations having variations of it (I might use Margot myself)

Clownfish123 · 17/06/2019 21:18

Clapham 😂 wondered when someone would pick me up on Britain being in Europe. I know I know, i just didn't know how else to put it. Certain names just sound very 'un-British' and I didn't want her constantly being met with surprise... 'oh, interesting, what's your background?' Etc. But I can see it's not an issue with Greta from this thread. I like the fact it works internationally.
In terms of delicate and porcelain, hmm I am small and petite but my DH is 6'4, so who knows!

Merename Greh-uh you mean?

CarrieBlu · 17/06/2019 20:48

I love Greta. I would go for it.

Ohyesiam · 17/06/2019 20:46

Greta is a truly beautiful name. There is a small but though.... to me it is a very delicate woman with exquisite porcelain bones. So I wouldn’t have risked it on mine Incase she was lumpen!

ClaphamOmniwuss · 17/06/2019 20:42

I know a little Greta! No “European” links, beyond the fact she’s British...😂. Scottish surname, sound good together.

I don’t think Greta needs Margaret as a BC name at all, and I’m bemused why you’d “Shorten” it to

It’s a lovely name, I much prefer it to Ada!

Clownfish123 · 17/06/2019 20:17

I like Etta too but think I prefer Greta. It could be shortened to Etta if she preferred that though which gives options.

NotTheQueensBirthday · 17/06/2019 18:57

It's ok. What about Etta?

EmmaLouise19 · 17/06/2019 18:56

I really like Greta much nicer than Ada! It was on our list for a while Smile

starzig · 17/06/2019 18:52

Greta is lovely. Why on earth would you nickname?

Merename · 17/06/2019 18:28

I love it but my only reservation would be lazy pronunciation, like not really pronouncing the t - don’t know how to type that but hopefully it makes sense, almost like a dull t?

Sophronia · 17/06/2019 18:22

Love it.

Astronica · 17/06/2019 02:12

I love Greta. I wouldn't assume European links at all and don't see any reason why you couldn't use it. Ada is okay, but prefer Greta.

itsagodawfulsmallaffair · 16/06/2019 23:04

I know a 13 year old Greta, no European links.

Clownfish123 · 16/06/2019 22:47

@tempsperdu thanks for your post. So helpful to hear from someone with a little Greta. I tend to agonise over names too, it's really hard deciding. Good to hear you are happy with your choice Smile

DD (18 months) is Greta. It’s definitely a marmite name in that some people find it quite harsh sounding, but reactions irl have been overwhelmingly positive - lots of compliments. We wanted something fairly uncommon but familiar, and feminine without being girly - also like that that it’s quite international and works well in several languages.

We alternate between Greta and Ettie at the moment but will probably just use the full version as she gets bigger. After lots of agonising over names, we’re really happy with our choice. Smile

GreenTulips · 16/06/2019 21:54

There are loads of European names about I don’t think it matters one jot

Clownfish123 · 16/06/2019 21:50

Thanks for all the opinions, really helpful.
It's definitely my current front runner. My only hesitation is around the fact that people might assume European links and think it's an odd choice, but this thread has made me feel more confident with it.

Absolutely love Greta! I’m not so keen on Ada, but really like Ida.

LoeweHammock · 16/06/2019 18:08

Not keen on Ada. Edie i like though

LoeweHammock · 16/06/2019 18:08

I like it. Dont see what difference have an Irish / English sur name

daisypond · 16/06/2019 18:03

I’m not keen, though would like it if short for Margareta. I’ve always thought it has an element of “pretend I’m an Austrian milkmaid” that I don’t like. Might grow on me. I really dislike Ettie, though. That just makes it a bland no-name. Greta is lots better than that.

Ginger1982 · 16/06/2019 16:22

I think it's nice. Greta Scacchi was a beautiful actress in her day.
