We love the name Maelie (May-lee). We feel it's pretty and unique and are fully aware she will need to spell out her name.

We don't usually share our names with anyone so I would like honest opinions on here before we finally settle. I don't want to regret it but we have loved this name for over a decade and we can't seem to settle on anything else!! This is our first girl after two boys. Thank you Smile

Mailys/ Maëlys in French is pronounced My - lease. I have about three in each class I teach ( primary). Also Maëlle, Maylou and Maylyn. But I have never encountered this one.

MoodLighting · 15/06/2019 14:03

I'd pronounce it M-ale-ee

missmouse101 · 15/06/2019 14:00

No, another horrible mealy mealy sounding name like Amelia.

BlamesFartsOnTheNeighbour · 15/06/2019 13:53

It's more my-ay-lee in French, actually.

hexagon01 · 15/06/2019 12:54

I think it’s really lovely. Makes me think of the author Maile Meloy.

Icklepup · 15/06/2019 12:52

It makes me think of melee
And I don't like it

OhhMyLittleGirls · 15/06/2019 12:15

I think it sounds a bit 'made up' if you see what I mean, it may just be me as I've never heard it before! Would you like Molly? but I think if you like Maelie you should go for it x

DramaAlpaca · 15/06/2019 12:15

It's like Amelie in that's it's nice pronounced the French way, but not otherwise.

MikeUniformMike · 15/06/2019 12:13

Mealie

user71767 · 15/06/2019 12:11

I had Mailie on my list (I know one in real life) and it got completely slated on here when I asked so I got put off Blush

juneau · 15/06/2019 11:36

And what @TatianaLarina said.

TatianaLarina · 15/06/2019 11:30

The French pronunciation is My a lee not May a lee.

I think if use a French name for a child you should pronounce it correctly otherwise you just look ignorant.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 15/06/2019 11:28

It makes me think of Mealie (worm!)

It's meal, they are meal worms. Mealies is slang.

TheJoxter · 15/06/2019 11:27

Just reminds me of this (which is mocked throughout the internet) sorry OP

Maelie, Mealie, Male-y? Female-y?

Nah, don't like it - sorry. No one is going to know how to spell or pronounce it, so she'll forever be correcting people and that would annoy the hell out of me if it was my name. If you're British and will be living in Britain I'd choose something that you won't have that issue with.

Gobletoffire · 15/06/2019 11:25

I actually really like it.

AuntieStella · 15/06/2019 11:25

It mimics a French spelling, so I think you might find people pronounce it the French way as 'may-ellie'

Would you be OK with explaining that it's not the French way? I know I wouldn't have the patience to have a multiple or pronunciation name, but you might not mind

NameChange30 · 15/06/2019 11:23

Maelie is pronounced very differently from "mealy" but of course many English speakers won't know that and will mangle the pronunciation and associate the two things.

NotTheQueensBirthday · 15/06/2019 11:21

It's grim. Mealy-mouthed, mealy-worms.

TurquoiseAndPurple · 15/06/2019 11:12

Mailie to me would be pronounced like Miley Cyprus because of the ai.

I don't mind Maelie but agree it sounds/looks like Mealie.

AverageMummy · 15/06/2019 10:29

I don’t really like it but it’s not terrible to me
I know a sweet little Marnie - does that appeal?

PotteringAlong · 15/06/2019 09:55

Nope. Not for me.

TatianaLarina · 15/06/2019 09:54

Don’t like it at all.

Love Maëlys though.

LazyLizzy · 15/06/2019 09:54

I'd read it as My-lee and think it was a 'unique' spelling.

SallyWD · 15/06/2019 09:47

I've never heard it but I like it. It's sweet and pretty. Would work for a little girl and a woman.
