Maelie opinions

We love the name Maelie (May-lee). We feel it's pretty and unique and are fully aware she will need to spell out her name.

We don't usually share our names with anyone so I would like honest opinions on here before we finally settle. I don't want to regret it but we have loved this name for over a decade and we can't seem to settle on anything else!! This is our first girl after two boys. Thank you Smile

It's a more 'ma' sound than 'my' and at the end an emphasis on 'LISSE'

BlamesFartsOnTheNeighbour · 16/06/2019 07:53

the two of you are at cross-purposes on Mailys, which is My-ee-lease. You could write that My-lease.

TatianaLarina · 15/06/2019 23:00

The middle eh is almost ay.

It is but not quite, it’s very hard to render the aë in English. It’s a short eh not unlike é.

I figured if I wrote ay people would think it was My ay lease.

TatianaLarina · 15/06/2019 22:51

I have a Mailys in my family and I can assure you that that is how her name is pronounced

No doubt but are not the same.

manicinsomniac · 15/06/2019 21:21

I like it. I'd probably say it like Miley when I first saw it but I'd only need telling once. Go for it.

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/06/2019 18:37

I think it's very pretty. I like the alternative French versions too.

pinkhousesarebest · 15/06/2019 18:32

TatianaLarina I have a Mailys in my family and I can assure you that that is how her name is pronounced.

BlueMerchant · 15/06/2019 17:34

I don't like it. Sounds a bit 'common' sorry and I don't like the spelling in any form.
Mae-leigh would be how I think of itBlush

MikeUniformMike · 15/06/2019 17:28

Maylia is no better. The nn will Be Mayl/Mael like in Daily Mail.

diddlediddle · 15/06/2019 16:51

If you still like it after this thread OP then I guess it's the one 😳

I like the sound but not the spelling. It's going to make prononciation and spelling really hard for her and yes it looks more like mealie. Maylie or Mayley would be better.

Also to me it sounds a bit unfinished, like calling a child Katie.

What about Maylia, nn maylie?

Lavenderblues · 15/06/2019 16:50

I like it. Maelie is an old name, definitely not made up.

I know a little Maelie who pronounces it Ma-eh-lee

The middle eh is almost ay.

LittleDoritt · 15/06/2019 16:15

Worms.
Mannish.
Yoonique.

My first thoughts. The French pronunciation and spelling is very pretty though.

guiltynetter · 15/06/2019 16:10

I really like it. :)

MrsMiggins37 · 15/06/2019 16:09

Awful

sincethereis · 15/06/2019 16:06

People will struggle with pronouncing it.

Will it sound as nice when said by an English person as opposed to french?

It does seem a bit made up?

Maylee is a much clearer spelling.

I don’t like the name but obviously you love it but do consider a few of those concerns

TatianaLarina · 15/06/2019 16:04

Mailys/ Maëlys in French is pronounced My - lease

My a lease.

Sagradafamiliar · 15/06/2019 15:06

It sounds wrong' when it's pronounced like mail-y, male-y. Like it's meant to be an adjective or something.

NameChange30 · 15/06/2019 14:57

What fiddle said, too.

NameChange30 · 15/06/2019 14:57

The fact that people on this thread are disagreeing about how to pronounce it just proves my earlier point that many English people will mangle the pronunciation.

HildegardCrowe · 15/06/2019 14:54

Sounds sort of trailer-trashy (sorry), not French at all.

AloneLonelyLoner · 15/06/2019 14:47

@AnchorDownDeepBreath that's irrelevant and the point still stands (slang or not) it reminds me, and others on here of worms.

Watchingthetelly · 15/06/2019 14:27

I also thought of worms

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 15/06/2019 14:24

I quite like it but also think most French names lose all their charm when pronounced by someone who isn't French.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 15/06/2019 14:23

Worms!!!!!

SilverySurfer · 15/06/2019 14:18

Don't like it - don't really like any names (usually for girls) made up of more vowels than consonants.
