How would you pronounce Aurelia?

Aurelia is one of the names we're considering for a girl. It hadn't occurred to me that there was more than one way to pronounce it until I looked at the Nameberry page which showed 2 different pronunciations - neither of which was the one I've been using! So how would you pronounce it?

R E L Ah

MrsWidgerysLodger · 12/06/2019 10:44

Or-ray-lee-ah.

Bottledate · 12/06/2019 10:42

In my head I read 'Or-REE-lee-ah', but speaking would probably assume 'Or-RAY-lee-ah' spoken.
Agree that it's a lovely name but setting up a lifetime of frustrating corrections, whichever pronunciation you choose.

Oh-rell-lee-ah. Gorgeous name, wanted it for DC2 but had a boy.

KnittingForMittens · 12/06/2019 07:21

Or-Real-E-Ah

FenellaMaxwell · 12/06/2019 07:16

In France it’s Or-rell-ia
In Spain it’s Or-ray-lia
In Germanic languages it’s -Ow-ray-lia
And in England you will get a horrible mish mash of all three I’m afraid. Shame - it’s a pretty name.

Ontopofthesunset · 11/06/2019 21:52

Well, the English pronunciation is Or-reel-i-a (like the male equivalent Aurelius) but the Spanish pronunciation would be Or-ell-i-a and the German Ow-rel-i-a.

Prettylittlelady · 11/06/2019 21:46

Thanks everyone - this is really interesting! I think I've counted 3 different ways to pronounce the first syllable and 3 for the second too, so quite a lot of variants. I was pronouncing it Or-rell-ee-ah, which is one of the options that's come up most, but the fact that there's no consensus is definitely making me think twice about using it. Our surname has an unusual spelling, so we want to try and avoid ambiguity with the first name!
