We’re somehow only two months away from meeting our little girl and I’d ideally like to shorten our list before she arrives.

Opinions on these names to help us do that please? Florence, Mabel, Beatrice, Beatrix and Lucia. Big sister is Violet. Thanks!

@Jessi88 so it is! I looked it up out of interest and there are only 144 in France so it's unusual too :) You've got some great names to choose from so I'm sure whatever you decide will be perfect. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and best of luck for your new baby!

Lucia Florence is beautiful

Jessi88 · 30/06/2019 09:50

@Lastbustowhitehawk I worry Josephine is probably a bit too old fashioned especially with Violet. I know Violet is too but it’s also gaining popularity.

I always thought Esmée was the French feminine spelling of the names and the é/ée determines the pronunciation. I’m sure it’s a legit spelling - there’s a charity that spells it Esmée.

From your original list I definitely prefer Beatrice, and Bea/Bee is a great nn. You mentioned Josephine as a middle name, is there a reason you're not considering it as a first name? It's gorgeous and works well with Violet. I'm not keen on Esme and definitely not Esmée - is that a real spelling? I speak French and have never come across it.

Jessi88 · 30/06/2019 08:57

Thanks everyone! Somehow our list has gotten longer since this. We’re also considering Esme/Esmée as well as the names already listed. I think we’re best to wait until she’s here and hope one speaks to us lol.

Lucia Florence is lovely!

Fatkins · 27/06/2019 19:12

I love Florence, Mabel and Beatrice!

I do not like Lucia or Beatrix.

small2018 · 27/06/2019 19:05

Lucia

didihearthatright123456 · 27/06/2019 19:04

Beautiful 💗 but I do have a Florence Mabel & a Beatrice so I am biased xx

iemma321q · 27/06/2019 19:00

I think either Florence or Beatrice.

KinderSurpriseBump · 06/06/2019 20:08

My favourite is Lucia (Loo-See-Ah) from your list. Very pretty and timeless

Marty93 · 06/06/2019 14:10

Florence - nice and pretty - would probably be shortened to Flo.
Mabel - Cute but reminds me of a dogs name more than anything.
Beatrice - Meh. could take or leave this one
Beatrix - same as above.
Lucia - No - reminds me of a female version of Lucifer. not keen.

Jessi88 · 06/06/2019 11:07

@99bb This is my issue with Beatrice vs Beatrix, not that I completely hate Trixie. I slightly prefer Beatrix as a full name simply because it reminds me of Beatrix Potter. My parents would read her books to me as a child and she’s one of my all time favourite authors. I prefer the shortenings Bea and Triss over Trixie and Trix however.

Love Mabel (and Martha!)

AuntGertrude · 05/06/2019 18:41

Mabel is lovely and underused.

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/06/2019 18:34

Lucia Florence for me, all lovely names.

99bb · 05/06/2019 18:29

We have a Beatrice and I am still so glad we chose it. DH originally wanted Beatrix, but I couldn’t cope with the possibility of Trixie as a nick name.

Jessi88 · 05/06/2019 18:27

Thanks everyone! We’ve narrowed things down a bit. I’d still like to eliminate either Beatrice or Beatrix before she arrives because they’re so similar that I don’t think seeing her will help anyway.

Beatrice/Beatrix Aurora
Beatrice/Beatrix Flora
Beatrice/Beatrix Mabel

Lucia is my favourite
Evangeline is also very nice
Strongly dislike Flora

Jessi88 · 05/06/2019 16:51

WDYT of Evangeline? Is it too frilly and long? Flora or Mabel as the first middle? The second is 4 letters and 1 syllable long.

For a while, I preferred Beatrix where as my husband favoured Beatrice. Now we’re both pretty even on them which doesn’t help lol.

I agree on the middle names for Florence and Mabel. My husband thinks all options sound fine but I only really like a few for each name. Josephine is probably my favourite for Mabel but Violet does have 2 middle names so length is something I’m wary of. The second middle name we’re thinking this time round is the shortening of my great grandmother’s name, which she always went by.

I don’t dislike it but Flo isn’t my favourite shortening and I think we’d get that with Florence therefore we’re rethinking that. We used Felicity for Violet’s middle name because I couldn’t stand the shortening, Flick. As you’ve guessed she’s Violet Felicity. She also has a 4 letter second middle name which is also meaningful.

Although it probably should, the potential pronunciation issues with Lucia isn’t putting me off. I think we could shorten it to Chi or CiCi to help too - once my husband has figured out which pronunciation he prefers as I love either lol.

I love all of them except Beatrice. If I had to choose I'd go for Mabel.

TatianaLarina · 05/06/2019 14:27

I like Lucia too, but I have an Italian friend called Loo chee a and everyone calls her Loo see a.

Hobbesmanc · 05/06/2019 13:54

There's some lovely choices. I love Lucia mainly because I adore the Mapp and Lucia novels of the 1920s. Florence is maybe a little too popular and sadly I still think of Mabel as being a dumpy little aunt.
