Evelyn or Avelyn?

AngeloMysterioso · 02/06/2019 23:54

DH and I have been discussing names for DC1 this evening. We've already got boys names fixed, using our Father's and Grandfather's names, but we're undecided on girls. I've had one preferred name for ages which DH was happy to go along with but this evening we threw a few others into the mix and two we really like are Evelyn and Avelyn, but we can't decide which we prefer!

We're pronouncing them like Ev from ever and Ave like rave.

Surname is one syllable, consonant initial.

Putting it to the MN jury! Any thoughts?

I got told dd2s name sounded like a boat Grin

Penny4Thoughts · 06/06/2019 17:59

@AngeloMysterio I think savage is quite good because you see the name in all it’s glory. ALL names will get negative comments in the following:

  • Chavvy
  • Try hard
  • Boring
  • Bully target
  • Ugly
  • Dated
  • Will date
  • Wet / weak
  • Too far the wrong gender
  • Too difficult to spell
  • Bad with your surname
  • Will be 10 million of them (apparently)
  • Too associated with [insert serial killer / missing child / TV character]
  • Means a rude word in a foreign language

It really is endless.

I think it’s really useful to know if the name you’re interested in sounds to others the way it sounds to you. Some of those things will bother you & others wouldn’t. I’d want to make sure I was seeing everything others saw & not accidentally giving my child BJ initials or something. But if I know it already & don’t care? Then that’s up to me!

MsTSwift · 06/06/2019 17:50

I think you can pick a much better name for your baby. We went round the houses and were fixed on Olivia the whole pregnancy until a week before the birth when we realised how popular it was. Sat in garden with name book and found the perfect name. At my first baby group there were 3 Olivia’s - close shave!

Kokeshi123 · 06/06/2019 13:13

People can be a bit blunt in here, but the thing is, it's one of the few places where you can get really honest opinions. Most people will say "lovely" when you suggest a name to them, regardless of what they think.

Agree with a previous poster, all the "Ev-" and "Av-" names just sound the same after a while. And most people will not pronounce Evelyn as "Ev-lin".

Moondancer73 · 06/06/2019 11:57

Avelyn makes me think of Aveline from 80's sitcom bread. Don't do it 😂

AngeloMysterioso · 06/06/2019 11:52

PCohle same here!

Penny4Thoughts frightened to say in case everyone tears it to shreds! Thought it was just AIBU where people are savage...

I think the ev-lin / ev-uh-lin thing is just down to accents. I would say ev-lin but the two sound virtually indistinguishable to me.

It's like cath-rin / cath-er-in

Penny4Thoughts · 06/06/2019 10:33

What was the other girl name you’ve loved for a long time?

EleanorOalike · 06/06/2019 10:30

Genuinely OP, I’ve taught loads of Eve-lins and Ev-uh-lins and have known a few elderly ladies and gentlemen called Evelyn over the years.

Have never come across an Ev-lin. If you look it up phonetically that is an incorrect pronunciation.

You seem sold on Avelyn despite most of us giving our opinion that it seems like a made up name and your child will spend their life correcting people. It’s what you think and feel that counts so just use it. I don’t understand why you bothered asking for opinions if you didn’t want them.

CassianAndor · 06/06/2019 09:36

I've never heard Evelyn pronounced Ev-Lin either.

Either Eve-lin (for a man?) or Ev-ah-Lin (for a woman).

Avelyn sounds made up and given that it's not even the Anglicized version of the Irish name, it is made up.

Penny4Thoughts · 06/06/2019 09:33

I don’t really understand why people post in these forums when they don’t like hearing people’s views. Avelin is going to sound made up which in turn makes it seem either quite chavvy or just a very young mum - but it’s the name you love & want so why ask? Once a baby is here & announced people tend to be polite anyway. There are far far worse around anyway - people in here have suggested Tree as a girls name before now.

Penny4Thoughts · 06/06/2019 09:30

I’ve only heard Eve-Lin or Eh-ve-Lin

You’re doing an alternative pronunciation? Evlin?

AngeloMysterioso · 06/06/2019 09:05

Ev-lin? Huh?
Evelyn is either eve-lin or ev-ah-lin.
You can't just ignore the e in the middle.

Think you’ll find lots of people do...

SisterMaryLoquacious · 06/06/2019 07:16

Eve, Evie and Ava are all very popular at the moment so your DD may be part of an whole bunch of them (even if that doesn’t match your preferred pronunciation). It’s like calling her Eloisa - in theory very unusual: in practice just another Ellie.

BoomZahramay · 06/06/2019 07:00

Ev-lin? Huh?
Evelyn is either eve-lin or ev-ah-lin.
You can't just ignore the e in the middle.

It's not like Amelia/Emilia. They sound the same by accident but are actually long established names in their own right. Emilia is Italian, the feminine fom of Emilio. The English equivalent is Emily.
Amelia is the English equivalent of the German Amalia, meaning work.

Avelyn is obviously your own variant on Evelyn. I would pronouce it 'ay-vlin', which I think is what you wanted. It's certainly not terrible, but it's going to be an, "Avelyn." "Sorry?" "Avelyn.", situation.

MsTSwift · 06/06/2019 06:25

Evelyn’s become eve though. Perfectly nice name just be aware it’s very well used. If doesn’t bother you fine but I have a popular name myself and wanted to avoid that for my kids.

AngeloMysterioso · 06/06/2019 06:20

I’m not actually using the name Aibhlinn though am I? So whether that’s pronounced lin or leen is irrelevant.

OP posts:
PCohle · 06/06/2019 02:56

I like Aibhlinn, but Avelyn looks made up or like a typo. That said, I would expect Aibhlinn to been pronounced with a -leen sound.

OkPedro · 06/06/2019 02:25

angelo MN isn’t the place to ask about names that aren’t British..it’s a head fuck..

AngeloMysterioso · 05/06/2019 22:45

I’m not suggesting Eve. Or the version of Evelyn that starts with Eve.

OP posts:
MsTSwift · 05/06/2019 21:20

I like Adeline. The mums of Eves I know have said they would have rethought had they realised how popular it is

Yoozanaim · 05/06/2019 20:47

May I offer you Adeline. If you haven't seen it yet, The Age Of Adeline is an utterly beautiful film and made me LOVE the name, even though names of that ilk (granny-chic, imo) generally aren't to my taste - and I think it fits your criteria - like Evelyn but nowhere near as high up the popularity charts. Addy is a super cute nn too, Del works if she wants to sound more gender-neutral, Della is also cool.

Cbeebiesrehab · 05/06/2019 18:09

Untamedtoad it’s unlikely to be this generations ‘Sarah’ given it’s not even in the top 20 ( it’s 22) and there are far more names to pick from nowadays so even top 10 names aren’t going to be the ‘Sarahs’. Very strong reaction to an inoffensive name.
If you want Avelyn I would probably go for the Irish spelling however I think Avelyn is perfectly fine and nice when said aloud. I would go with Evelyn.

Pinkvoid · 05/06/2019 14:30

Never heard of Avelyn. Evelyn was very common when my first two DC were born in 2010/11, unsure how common it still is. I’m not keen on either tbh.

Isthisafreename · 05/06/2019 14:28

@AngeloMysterioso - Aibhlinn is a perfectly common Irish name (I’m half Irish, have a huge Irish family) but it’s not at all common in the rest of the UK

Ummm, Ireland isn't in the UK.

The Irish pronunciation would be ave-leen, with the ave similar to have. If you wanted it like rave, you would need a fada (accent) on the a. That said, you get loads of variants of names, depending on dialect. My name is pronounced very differently in different parts of the country.
