Not due until October but DH and I have got the list down to 10 names for each sex (chosen not to find out whether it's a girl or a boy) and we're stuck! Please critique our list :

Girls :
Alexandra
Cassandra
Catherine
Charlotte
Elizabeth
Felicity
Helena
Jessica
Madeleine
Nina

Boys:
Alexander
Benjamin
Daniel
David
James
Jonathan
Joshua
Samuel
Thomas
William

Please don't suggest any new names - we want to narrow the list down, not add to it! Thanks Smile

These are my favourites from your list:
Girls :
Catherine
Charlotte (still like it but it is getting too overused)
Elizabeth

Boys:
Alexander
Samuel

Notrobusta · 04/06/2019 20:51

I was going to say David will end up as Dave. A good middle name perhaps after your dad. You have a few names that are also on my list. I would go for Elizabeth or Alexandra and for a boy Alexander . I thing alexander David sounds a nice combo.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 03/06/2019 08:21

Girls - Helena
Boys - David or James

It's funny reading comments from some pps as to me, names like Thomas, Samuel, Alexander etc are far more dates than David. I had Great Uncles Samuel and Alexander and my grandfather was Thomas whereas David was more popular among my contempories.
Good luck choosing.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 03/06/2019 08:10

Elizabeth or Alexander

soarin · 02/06/2019 23:02

Girls - felicity my all time favourite name.
Boys - Benjamin , classic, cute but strong

Secretlifeofme · 02/06/2019 22:58

Thank you everyone! Some food for thought here. David is my dad's name, which is probably why a few people are saying it's dated. I do like it though and I think Davy is a nice shortening for a baby and little boy. Imagine if he got called Dave though ShockSad

daisypond · 02/06/2019 16:24

I like your games in general. I’m not keen on Charlotte - downmarket to me - or Joshua - about 20-30 years out of date.

Mnbb · 02/06/2019 15:33

@Sessy19 - ha ha. I probably am. And if you can’t air your mad opinions on MN then where on earth can you?

Sessy19 · 02/06/2019 13:16

@Mnbb, this:

William - currently too associated with future King who is fucking around behind his wife’s back

made me think you’re barking mad!

Innersmellbow · 02/06/2019 11:47

Nina is the least common on your girls list and is a name to grow on people - you have to hear it a few times to really get to love it. It's a beautiful underused name.

Daniel or David are similar from your boys list however David is less common of those two.

Peoples like or dislike of names can be very random. David is due for a comeback but you'll likely be one of the first ones.

All the other names are everywhere!

sawyersfishbiscuits · 02/06/2019 11:27

Nina or Elisabeth (Eliza or Lizzie are lovely)

Benjamin (Ben and Benji are lovely as well as full name)

monicagellerrr · 02/06/2019 11:17

Nina and Alexandra are both lovely. From your boys list I like Alexander, William, Samuel and Thomas.

You've got some lovely strong names there, no wonder you're having difficulty choosing!

Fedoratheexploreer · 02/06/2019 10:31

I’m torn between Helena and Nina for a girl, but they’re both gorgeous. And out of the boys I’d chose Alexander, because there’s a wide range of nicknames.

mistletoeandneatvodka · 02/06/2019 09:45

Alexandra- love
Cassandra- not keen
Catherine - I like the look of it but I’m not overly keen on the sound
Charlotte- too boring
Elizabeth - lovely
Felicity - my DD’s pony is named this
Helena- lovely
Jessica - too popular. My DD is friends with several
Madeleine - love it
Nina - ambulance siren (sorry!)

Boys:
Alexander - not keen
Benjamin - love it. My favourite
Daniel - no
David - time for a revival I think
James - not keen
Jonathan - not keen at all!
Joshua - no
Samuel - no
Thomas - lovely though super popular
William - not keen

I’d go for Benjamin or Madeleine

tiramisu1 · 02/06/2019 08:23

I like Nina and Jonathan.

Some of your suggestions are overused and dull. Also, William can be teased with Willy.

Mnbb · 02/06/2019 08:16

Alexandra - I like it but it will be shortened to Alex or Lexie and I don’t like either
Cassandra - v dates, v 80s
Catherine - v dull
Charlotte - v dull and currently too assoc with the princess
Elizabeth - But dull but nice, like Beth
Felicity - I like it but a bit dated
Helena - meh
Jessica - fine but dull
Madeleine - I like it but still have McCann associations
Nina - my fav, classic, timeless, international, fun, not over used.

Alexander - fine
Benjamin - dull and a bit dated
Daniel - fine
David - v dull and dated
James - quite like but a bit dull
Jonathan - hmmm, not sure
Joshua - every naughty boy ever
Samuel - like v much
Thomas - like
William - currently too associated with future King who is fucking around behind his wife’s back

Aquilla · 02/06/2019 08:04

Helena is one of those names that people will hesitate over as there are two ways to say it.
Daniel and Thomas are very popular and chances are he'll be one of a few in his class.

NeverPutAWetFootInABirkenstock · 02/06/2019 08:00

Alexandra clunky
Cassandra feels 80s but I like Cassie
Catherine boring
Charlotte boring
Elizabeth lovely
Felicity horsey
Helena hhm, not sure why I don’t like this
Jessica twee
Madeleine love it
Nina love it

Alexander ok
Benjamin I like it, but not Ben
Daniel v v popular and a bit dull
David feels v dated
James most boring MN name ever
Jonathan ok
Joshua don’t like it at all
Samuel nice
Thomas boring
William nice

LadyGAgain · 02/06/2019 07:52
