Just wondering if we think these names are usable again. Eric already seems to be back in. I don't think any of these are inherently horrible words (except maybe Derek!)? What do we think - are any ok?

Neil
Alan
Keith
Ian
Martin
Malcolm
Trevor
Clive
Derek
Paul
Brian
Graham
Barry
Kenneth
Glen
Philip
Nigel
Colin
Terence
Kevin

Alan is a wonderful name. As is Steve. Grin

forevercurious · 01/06/2019 18:11

I know a 2 year old Trevor

Coolcoolcoolcoolcool · 01/06/2019 18:00

I'm sorry but I've never met a nice Ian, every last one has been a wanker.

StCharlotte · 01/06/2019 16:38

I went out with a Frank once. I was delighted to discover it was short for Francois. Soooo much sexier!

wheresmymojo · 01/06/2019 15:54

It tends to take 80-100 years for names to come back...so your names that were popular in the 50s/60s are due a comeback in 2030-2040.

Now would be 'too soon', 2030 they will still be seen as unusual but the hipsters will start using them. By 2040/2045 they should be bang on trend.

I knew at least one baby Frank in the early 90s and there were lots of Stans/Stanleys around then too. (Inner London.)

I like Clive and I may be the only person in the UK who also likes Nigel, possibly because of the combined effect of Nigel Pargetter in The Archers and a former colleague who was about as far from a nerd/fuddy duddy old man as it's possible to be.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/06/2019 15:27

There's a Kenneth in Y6 at my school. He is one of the 'coolest' 11 year old boys I have ever come across and is really nice as well...

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 01/06/2019 13:52

I don’t know any babies/children with those names. I like Clive though

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 01/06/2019 13:51

Ian/Iain and Graham/Graeme come up every so often in Scotland.

I quite like Paul, seems a bit more classic than old man

QueenBumble · 01/06/2019 13:48

Philip possibly but I think no to the rest

Sophronia · 01/06/2019 13:45

I didn’t know the 30s names I listed are back already! They haven’t caught on in my part of the Westcountry yet Grin Still mainly Alfies, Albies and Archies here.

Yellowpolkadot · 31/05/2019 22:09

I met a baby frank yesterday, it made me smile, wouldn’t be my choice but quite cute

yesok · 31/05/2019 21:49

Love Colin.
They'll all come around again no doubt.

MontanaSkies · 31/05/2019 21:04

@diddlediddle Yes! Ivo must be another reason I thought Ian sounded quite "now". I know of a couple of little Ivos born this year.

lolabellina · 31/05/2019 20:30

I know of a surprising number of Alans that are all in one school!

Notquiteagandt · 31/05/2019 19:53

Alan is a really popular polish name. I know 2 under 10.

I know loads young davids its really popular north london.

Hear eric and dennis about too. But more so since I moved back up north.

Not to disimular too philip but I heard a little girl called phylis other week. Thought it sounded quite cool.

BlueMerchant · 31/05/2019 19:41

Paul is lovely. I think it's always been quite popular.
Glen is nice
Others are awful.

MikeUniformMike · 31/05/2019 19:38

I love Dennis.

diddlediddle · 31/05/2019 19:37

@TatianaLarina 😂

@StCharlotte haha, probably their surnames are even more fashionable now!

I think I'm talking myself into Ian as an actual contender. I do love Malcolm too though. Not sure I can stomach Barry

OhhMyLittleGirls · 31/05/2019 19:36

i quite like Philip, the others not so much!

TatianaLarina · 31/05/2019 19:30

My nephews have a hamster called Clive. HTH

StCharlotte · 31/05/2019 19:28

OP you appear to have stolen my 1960s school register.

I could even give you their surnames Grin

diddlediddle · 31/05/2019 19:15

@MontanaSkies yes that's what I was thinking about Ian. It's not really any different from Ivo etc is it

Corndog · 31/05/2019 18:06

Clive is a great name

Martin is too

Petalflowers · 31/05/2019 18:01

I think Simon Cowell made Eric an acceptable name, after naming his son Eric. Before then, I think it was largely considered as an old fashioned, and not retro-Cool.
