This is the ONS web link to all registered baby (girl) names in England and Wales for the last however many years. I'm not a fan generally of criticising other people's choices but some of these are - er - surprising!

e.g: Victory - appeared 4 times in 2016
Unique - 5 in 2013
Strawberry - 3 in 2012
Sin - 4 in 2007
Zvikomborero - none at all except 4 in 2012 - why?
(this one is weird): Tilly- yes that's Tilly hypen. Not just Tilly, not Tilly-something. Just Tilly-. 4 of them in 2007.

and my personal favourite: Bilge. 4 little Bilges born in 2012. I really hope that's a name that works well in a different language.

I really like Strawberry. I mean I wouldn't actually use it but I like it a lot. I'd even quite like to be called Strawberry myself! Blush

That was my great-grandmother's middle name. She hated her first name, Flora, so went by Vicky.

I toyed with Flora for DD but it seemed odd to choose it after my G-G when she'd hated it.

Tilly- will be Tilly-Mae or Tilly-Rose or something, and they’ve filled it out wrong, and put the latter half of the hyphenate I. The middle name box.

I love these lists! There’s nothing wrong with pointing out that they’re unusual names and discussing them as long as we’re not being mean. I love unusual names - I’d be so excited to meet a little Strawberry!

Bilge is, as others have said, Turkish and is pronounced, sort of, like Billgay. 'Wise'.

Does anyone remember that show Lipstick Jungle? There was a kick-ass fashion designer called Victory Ford. I've loved the name Victory since then. And it's just a feminine version of Victor 🤷🏽‍♀️

Victory could be shortened to Vic or Vicky as they grow up so not the end of the world...

Strawberry is only as bad as Plum or Apple, both of which I’ve heard before (albeit Americans). I pity those children.

Bilge is an unfortunate name for a child being raised in an English speaking country. That's why it's helpful to google the fuck out of a name and see what stumbling blocks it may throw its owner.

I assume, Prosecco, that, as a pp said, that 'Tilly-' is either an error or somehow indicates stats for Tilly hyphenated with something? Hmm

Bilge means "wise" in Turkish.

I don't see why Victory is any weirder than Victoria or Victor, apart from simply being more unusual? It was in use for American puritans centuries ago. Also similar to Liberty.

Remember that "none" actually means "two or fewer" on these lists. Could easily be 1-2 kids called Zvikomborero ("blessings") and then 4 one year.

I was looking at a similar list for Boys names and found there were something like 15 boys called Squish last year, and several Beans.

Tilly- is probably an administrative mistake. Bilge is a Turkish name and Strawberry is quite cute and nicer than Olive (or Apple) imo.

These threads are just ignorant. Even the OP acknowledges that these are names that are entirely ordinary in other cultures. And it’s funny how people will call their offspring Beau or Belle or Cher but not Beautiful or Precious — are people really that monolingual?

I found a sweet little personalised bracelet that had been dropped at the zoo with the name "Bilge" on it. We were wondering if it meant something pretty in another language, good to know it does and people aren't just calling their kids Bilge with the English meaning!

(I hung it on a fence, hope little Bilge came back to look for it)

I knew a little girl called Zvikomborero when I lived in SA.

She was the first girl in the family for a number of years and there were about 12-13 boy cousins born before her. The name means something like many blessings which was very fitting for her family.
