Melody

What are your thoughts on the name Melody? We both really like it and it's between Sophia and Melody. Love Sophia but don't want her to be one of a few in a class and don't think that would be as likely with Melody. Thanks!

Melody is great and has a melody of its own when you say it. Elodie sounds as if you’ve dropped the M because you have a speech impediment.
Are classmates more likely to shorten names than they used to. MY siblings and I didn’t experience it and nor did my DC and friends DC. IME it was more likely to happen when an older child used a nn themselves.

ApocalypseNowt · 29/05/2019 17:09

I have a Melody! She's 8 now and we've only met one other (grownup) Melody.

No-one calls her Mel yet! Her little brother calls her 'Meggy' ConfusedGrin

goldensugar2 · 29/05/2019 15:39

Nooo, Not (smelly) Mellie..!

Melody is beautiful, don't ruin it.

goldensugar2 · 29/05/2019 15:37

Melody is lovely.

I wouldn't shorten it at all especially not to Deedee. Melody rolls off the tongue easily enough.

WyncyG · 29/05/2019 15:27

We're also seriously considering Melody :)
I suggested Elodie which I loved but DH didn't. He suggested Melissa which I thought was bizarrely 90's. Then we came across Melody and it feels like a nice middle ground!
I'm a Sophie so I always wanted to be called Sophia growing up (more exotic..!) and love my name now, except for the lack of proper nicknames. Therefore the options for Melody are extra appealing. We're loving 'Mellie' but 'Dee' might be better when she's older.

bridgetreilly · 28/05/2019 20:09

I really don't like Melody, sorry. So twee and girly-girl, and childish. I can't imagine a grown woman with the name.

I would pick Sophia a million times over Melody.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 28/05/2019 19:36

I like Melody and see, deedee as a nn.

PunkAssMoFo · 28/05/2019 15:57

Melody is lovely. Dee Dee is a great nickname.

Sophie is fine, but incredibly popular.

Kanga83 · 28/05/2019 15:32

I know a Melody and a Harmony (not siblings). I prefer Elodie as a grown up name personally.

Constantdishes · 28/05/2019 15:29

I read somewhere Sophia/Sofia and other variants is the most popular girls name in the world? Top 10 in Russia, Hungary, Germany, UK, Ukraine, Italy, Portugal and United States to name a few

Shadow1234 · 28/05/2019 15:00

I love the name Melody. I agree with you, that Soph as a shortening for Sophia isn't very nice.

GiGi18 · 28/05/2019 13:37

@Teddybearhunter thanks! I think that is what I like about it, it's a known word/name but you don't come across it often. So it's unusual but not made up.

Treaclepie19 · 28/05/2019 13:26

I prefer Elodie too 🙈

I think it of your two I'd choose Melody.

Teddybearhunter · 28/05/2019 13:26

Earlier I said I prefer Sophia but I’ve changed my mind - Melody is not a name I’ve ever come across so on that basis I think it’s a lovely choice. Also Dee is a really cute nn

GiGi18 · 28/05/2019 13:21

@MimiSunshine I did think of Dee/Dee-dee as a cute alternative nn. Didn't watch the hills but Lo is cute as well! Probably won't force a nickname, will just see what happens naturally and if she chooses Mel herself later in life that's fine.

MimiSunshine · 28/05/2019 13:02

I really like melody but it felt too much if a rhyme with DD1s name.

Mel will only happen by the time she’s at school by which point it’ll be her choice but if you wanted to shorten it then Lo (The Hills anyone 😉?) or even Didi is cute and a bit different

GiGi18 · 28/05/2019 12:43

@Teddybearhunter @MrsMeSeeks weirdly I don't like Elodie. My sister suggested this too but just not a fan. Can't say why even though it's so similar!

Thanks everyone, glad it's getting a mostly good response. I feel the same about the Mel shortening, not a huge fan of it but it might be inevitable. It's the one thing that is slightly putting me off. However, I also dislike the shortening Soph so I'd be in the same boat there. DH is so picky, it's taken us ages to get to these two names, there are lots more I like which he has vetoed!

@Clownfish123 I used to love the book and tv show! Think I'd draw the line at using Harmony if I had another girl in the future though, haha!

@Thesearmsofmine Melo is so cute, like that as an alternative NN.

Clownfish123 · 28/05/2019 12:23

I really like it. I've known two adult Melodys and they both suited it. One was nicknamed Melo which I thought was lovely.

Clubbercised · 28/05/2019 12:17

I don't like it, sorry. I think it's a bit flowery and 'Disney princess'.

Sophia is lovely, but it is popular. Not so much now though, so you might find that there aren't many babies with the name. I think it's more likely to be older girls with the name.

Haz1516 · 28/05/2019 11:51

Love Melody... but don't like Mel, which would probably be inevitable.

99bb · 28/05/2019 11:51

Was on my list but didn’t want Mel

MrsMeSeeks · 28/05/2019 11:48

Weirdly I prefer Elodie to Melody

Me too! I couldn't say way, but it just feels so much nicer. Although they're barely different.

Sophia is nice enough, but a bit 'meh'.

Teddybearhunter · 28/05/2019 11:17

I prefer Sophia (still less than 1% of babies?) but Melody is nice & definitely rarer. Weirdly I prefer Elodie to Melody as it seems more ‘name’ like - but I’m weird

taylorlynn · 28/05/2019 10:36

Love melody I just don't like the nickname Mel which puts me off x
