What do you all think of these names? These aren't my names but my sisters top 3. She asked me to post as she doesn't have an account on here but wanted others opinions as I'm 'too biased'.

For a girl:
Alaska
Effie
Phoenix (nix/nixie)

For a boy:
Artemis
Jasper
Leo

Effie was a character in Take The High Road so I view it fondly. It must be due a comeback.

No to Alaska.

I don't hate Phoenix but agree with others - it's more a boy's name.

Leo is ok. Famous to me as Tony and Cherie's baby's name.

Artemis is a girl's name and a bit far out.

No to Jasper. A bit weak.

I would use Artemis for a girl and Leo for a boy.

Don't like any names from your girl list, sorry.

I love Alaska as it reminds me of ‘Looking for Alaska’ by John Green.
I hate Effie sorry!
I dislike Phoenix, Artemis and Jasper.
Like Leo.

Effie is short for Elizabeth in skins
It’s short for Euphemia in a book called The Land Girls
It’s also short for Josephine and Stephanie, and Ephemy.
I have one and it’s a shortening for something else. Never had anyone say Effing Effie (yet).
I was going to call her Alice and had a number of people responded with ‘Alice, Alice, who the F&*% is Alice’. So to my mind, people who want to be plonkers will be. Even if you are called something simple and usual.

Leo is lovely for a boy

Effie is short for Euphemia round here.

I think she's also the wee lass in Silas Marner but I might be making that up.

I have an Effie and she would have been Jasper had she been a boy. So they are my choices from your lists.
Not a fan of Alaska but it’s personal preference.
Artemis could go by Artie.

Alaska - baked, half-baked
Effie - effin awful
Phoenix (nix/nixie) - Nix? Really? That's pants.

For a boy:
Artemis - girl's name
Jasper - ok
Leo - ok

My feedback (she should entirely pick what she likes and what she feels suits the baby - congratulations to her!)

Alaska - gives me Governor Palin/Tea Party vibes and wouldn't be my choice
Effie - I get the Skins thing but given the generational difference not likely a problem - I'd maybe opt for Euphemia that's a lie i wouldn't but you get my point and shorten to Effie as I like the name
Phoenix (nix/nixie) - not keen on the nickname

Artemis - yes this is nice, be prepared for the nickname 'arty'. V V American.
Jasper - I like this until the age of 8 and again above 50, but I have the same issue with Noah
Leo - probably would go for Leon or Leopold and shorten another lie, I wouldn't shorten it

Leo is lovely. Jasper is the name of too many friends puppies. The movie of Artemis Fowl is due out (and isnt there a character also called Effie? ) either way that would make me swerve them

Alaska is a cheap rip off fried chicken joint round here so no.

Effie was on my list but DH didn't like it.

Of the boys' names I like Leo the best.

Love Artemis but is a girls’ name to me. I know a Greek girl named Artemis

@Teddybearhunter I am sure you are right, but as Artemis is a Greek name, not a British one why would a British child think it's a girl's name. Not many children know who the Greek gods are.
