What do you think of Julian?

Good, solid, timeless, not overly used name?

Or a bit wet and pompous?

Just re-read the first Famous Five book with DD and was reminded how much I liked this name when I was a child.

It makes me think of the old radio comedy sketch characters, Julian and Sandy. Kenneth Williams and someone or other.

Can’t imagine calling a baby Julian any more than calling a baby, I dunno, Derek..?Confused

Unfortunately it makes me think of Julian Clary but any DC's peers wouldn't make that association at all.

I prefer Jude (because let's be honest Jude Law is a much better association).

We all have names that conjure up certain images, amalgamated from people we know in real life to fictional characters etc.

Julian – wet
Roy – sensible but dull
Carla – feisty
Verity - earnest

Those are some of mine.

Wet, to me, means someone who would be a bit feeble and a bit whiney.

But surely that depends on his/her character rather than his/her name ConfusedGrin

I like Julian.

Oliver is a wet name.

I really like it. I know three and they are all strong, high achieving, smiley.

@carmenbea @purplelavenders people tend to use the word wet alongside words like toff pompous pretentious etc I don’t think Oliver is likely to be considered that given it’s the most popular boys name of the last decade.

Wet doesn’t mean cutesy. It’s more the sort of name a Rees-Mogg kid would have - Augustus Cornelius Dordeelous Ridiculous etc

Alfie & Archie aren’t wet - they’d be more on the lower class side of things (I do like them but if they had a label that’s where they’d fall)

Julian to me is pretty borderline

Obviously it’s all subjective

I don't like it at all. But I think it's depends on who you know with that name and every Julian I have met have been really unpleasant people.

Is 'wet' weak?

In that case names like Alfie, Archie, Laurie seem very wet. They're way more weak and cutesy.

Julian, Nathan, Christian, Reuben seem very strong and solid.

I don't think Julian is a wet name at all! Confused to how people are defining wet Confused a wet name I would see as a Timothy or Oliver or Daniel certainly not Julian 😂 it's a very strong name x

I have a friend called Julian. He uses a different name except for official purposes.

I like it. I know two - one an adult who is a professional musician, the other a young (late teens) athlete. I think it’s a name that can take you anywhere in life.
