Cersei

I have genuinely come across a 3 year (ish) little girl called Cersei today.

Am I correct that the name was founded for Game Of Thrones and didn't exist in its own right beforehand? If I'm incorrect and it has a beautiful meaning I'll get off my soap box.

Cersei Lanister even in the first series of Game Of Thrones was bonking her brother and an all round nasty, murderous piece of work.

The name itself has a nice ring to it I suppose (Sur-cee for those not familiar with the show) but the connotations are terrible. Very dating also.

Thoughts?

Did you see the spelling? Cersei is from GoT but Circe is an enchantress from classical literature, notably the Odyssey. They are both pronounced ser-see.

@BreakfastAtSquiffanys @sleepismysuperpower1 ahhh not great connotations even then though. Looks like I'll have some interesting reading for tonight's feeds!

I looked it up and apparently its based of an ancient Latin name. 'The mythological sorceress who tempted Perseus and changed his men to swine and back to men according to Latin roots.'

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 23/05/2019 20:36

It's based on the much older name Circe

Why would you name your child after a cold blooded incestuous murdering sociopath?

LoisLittsLover · 23/05/2019 20:35

I think it's awful, both name and links to the show
