Cersei

I have genuinely come across a 3 year (ish) little girl called Cersei today.

Am I correct that the name was founded for Game Of Thrones and didn't exist in its own right beforehand? If I'm incorrect and it has a beautiful meaning I'll get off my soap box.

Cersei Lanister even in the first series of Game Of Thrones was bonking her brother and an all round nasty, murderous piece of work.

The name itself has a nice ring to it I suppose (Sur-cee for those not familiar with the show) but the connotations are terrible. Very dating also.

Thoughts?

Where does anyone get the right to bash another’s choice of name? Who gave you the authority to be such a bitch about it??? Every ‘name’ starts out somewhere, so get down off your judgemental little ponies!

@Sessy19 where has the OP bashed the name or been ‘a bitch’?Confused

You sound rather unpleasant and judgemental yourself

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 24/05/2019 18:51

I have to say that only having read the books, i assumed Cersei had a hard C (something like Kur-Sey in my head). I’d only hear Circe for the other pronunciation, and as pp said that is not wildly better pronunciation. There are way better bonkers ancient greek sorceresses to choose from.

Prometheus · 24/05/2019 18:49

I know a Circe who is about 10 years old. That name is lovely - read the book by Madeleine Miller, it's great.

HermioneWeasley · 24/05/2019 18:39

Circe is a fine classical name

Cersei is not

Buddyelf · 24/05/2019 07:59

Ok so totally going against the grain here. Big GOT fan here, and Cersei was one of my favourite characters, Lena Headey played that character so well. One of the best ‘badies’ I’ve seen. I actually like the name Cersei Blush but I suppose I wouldn’t consider for a name as the character did some very questionable things. Incest anyone? I think if I wanted to pay homage so to speak I would consider Lena as a name maybe? (Hides under a table Grin)

@daisypond I have a friend who gave her daughter the middle name Thea. I asked her the meaning and she had no idea... is it not common to choose a name but be aware of its meaning?!

@Sessy19 u ok hon?

PBobs · 24/05/2019 07:54

@Sleep it's Greek not Latin. Wouldn't call my child Circe even without GOT.

daisypond · 24/05/2019 07:33

Circe is an old name from the Odyssey. It’s not really any worse than Delilah as a mythological baddy, or any other enchantress figure.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 24/05/2019 06:54

@sessy19

Perhaps the OP is just a bit Confused that a parent would name their kid after the frankly evil and incestuous anti-heroine of a tits ‘n’ dragons blockbuster series.

Artbum · 24/05/2019 06:52

Circe is the name of my beautiful guinea pig (Circe turned Odysseus’ men into pigs). Really annoyed if people think she is named for the GOT character.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/05/2019 06:48

Ponies even?

Where did that come from?

DaphneFanshaw · 24/05/2019 06:48

Could have been worse, I have a little Khaleesi. I am regretting my choice of name for her now, I would rename her but I am a bit worried that she would burn me.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/05/2019 06:47

Little ponnies?

chipshopElvis · 24/05/2019 06:43

Circe was a witch in Greek myth, I know it from the Oddessy. Not great connotations though even if taken from GOT.

codenameduchess · 24/05/2019 06:15

It's at least a little more original than the hundreds of little 'Arya's popping up I suppose....

Cersei's mother I presume Blush

I've not heard of ot before (never watched game of thrones) I think the names terrible.

Proseccofuelled · 23/05/2019 22:16

No there’s a barking GoT person - it sounds like it’s not you sorry Grin

TheCrowdSayBoSecta · 23/05/2019 21:33

Sux2buthen · 23/05/2019 21:16

In think it's irrelevant, they like it so fair enough. Won't be the last I'm sure

Proseccofuelled · 23/05/2019 21:14

Please tell me you’re not the same GoT poster as the other day?
