What do people think of this girl name?

From what I can find it's a German/Frisian name pronounced like Micah (Mike-ah)

I used to speak to a client with this name at my old job and I've haven't been able to get it out of my head ever since. It's grown on me more and more!

I'm not currently pregnant but will be trying for a other possibly this year...

Today's world*

lucymegan · 23/05/2019 19:48

@TurquoiseAndPurple I'm not bothered because I have an easy/boring name and I still have to spell it out. I would much rather have to do all the spelling for a prettier name.

Same! There's about 5 million people with my name in the world and I still have to spell it to people. My friends name is Sara the amount of people that call her Sarah is a joke. My mums name is Jayne it often gets misspelt for Jane. I think in today's would most names need to be spelt out what with all the different spellings.

How do you pronounce maike?

whereonearth · 23/05/2019 19:38

Common in Dutch. Mai-keh. It’s nice to me but I am Dutch and have known several :)

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2019 19:36

I think you'd probably need to slightly bastardise the spelling to avoid of "you're called MAKE??"

I haven't discussed the name Maike with my OH. Doubt he'd go for it tbh. Just wondered what others thought of the name 🤷‍♀️

I like it. I think quite a few people will know it, or guess right - and if it's unfamiliar they're likely to ask.

I also know a Marieke (Marie-kuh) which you might like.

As for people saying it will always need to be spelled out... also true for those of us called Katherine, Isobel, Maya, Annabel or Hannah - not a big enough issue not to use a name imo. I have to spell out my first and last name every time, and it doesn't bother me at all. Particularly when it's pretty simple / quick to spell out - Maike is only 5 letters!

fluffyblankets · 23/05/2019 19:12

Not sure about Maike, but I do like the spanish name Maite which is similar, said “mai-te”

catmack16 · 23/05/2019 18:51

Maaike is the Dutch version used in Belgium and NL. I know a lovely Maaike.

3luckystars · 23/05/2019 18:48

I would pronounce that MAKE. (Mayke) It doesn't sound that nice pronounced like that.

The world is full of idiots like me.

MyInnerAlto · 23/05/2019 18:46

Quite a 'middle-aged lady' name in Germany. Also so much potential for confusion with Micah/Mike etc.

How about Wibke (also spelt Wiebke)?

NorthEndGal · 23/05/2019 18:41

It is one of my friends names, (from Germany) she pronounces it Mikey
Think it's beautiful

pinkcardi · 23/05/2019 18:41

Actually, this

Also.. I'm aware the child would be forever explaining and spelling the name out. Not really bothered about that aspect.

Makes me really cross: you don't care that you are inconveniencing your child. How bloody rude

pinkcardi · 23/05/2019 18:39

I know a male Micah - he's very English and always has to spell his name out

I know a female Meike - she's German and lives in Germany, so obviously no spelling issues.

As someone that has a name which always needs spelling out, and is therefore called a range of similar but incorrect names. Please please please please please do not subject your child to a whim of a name which yields a lifetime of errors, corrections and misunderstandings

SilviaSalmon · 23/05/2019 18:29

You might not be bothered about spelling it out, but your DD will have a lifetime of it.

MikeUniformMike · 23/05/2019 18:29

I know a Maike. Nice name.
