Laura or Gemma?

We are expecting DC2 shortly and two of the girl names we are considering are:

Laura
Gemma

Which do you prefer? DC1 is a boy and has a very traditional boys name (5 letters), so we want a nice short traditional girl's name to go with his name.

I'm leaning towards Laura, but my OH prefers Gemma. Any comments on either name would be appreciated.

Thanks

these are very late 80s/early 90s- if forced to pick Laura (Gemma is awful).

Proseccofuelled · 20/05/2019 12:52

Don’t like either
Laurel & Jemima are nice ?

Bluntness100 · 20/05/2019 12:43

Laura, it's a lovely feminine classic name.

Gemma not so much, I keep thinking Gemma Collins.

RuffleCrow · 20/05/2019 12:42

I actually really like Gemma and think it's due a revival.

There was a gorgeous ethereal Gemma in my class at primary school and it also makes me think of Gemma Whelan who's awesome in Horrible Histories & Upstart Crow amongst others things, and woefully underused in Game of Thrones.

Laura. As PP said it’s timeless whereas Gemma seems very dated to me (all Gemmas I know were born in the late 80s-early 2000s)

Barbarafromblackpool · 20/05/2019 12:33

Laura.

Bin85 · 20/05/2019 12:31

Laura is better by far

Kanga83 · 20/05/2019 12:28

I prefer Laura. Or Emma as an alternative to Gemma (although I know that wasn't an option!), I think it's the G in Gemma that I find dated.

BlueMerchant · 20/05/2019 12:26

Laura is lovely.
Gemma isn't.

FishCanFly · 20/05/2019 12:22

Laura is very boring. Gemma is cool

LarkDescending · 20/05/2019 12:06

Laura. A proper classic.

Not keen on Gemma, but I do love Jemima.

AdaColeman · 20/05/2019 12:01

Laura

Morgan12 · 20/05/2019 11:57

Gemma. I think Laura is one of the worst names.

pikapikachu · 20/05/2019 11:53

Laura because of Gemma Collins from TOWIE m. Jemima is cute though.

daisypond · 20/05/2019 11:48

Laura

Astronica · 20/05/2019 11:29

I love both names, but possibly Laura for the win as it seems a little more timeless.

DottieLottie1 · 20/05/2019 11:27

I like Laura.

Also Lauren.

I prefer Jenna.

rosegoldivy · 20/05/2019 11:19

Flicketyflack · 20/05/2019 11:09

Laura Wink

Papergirl1968 · 20/05/2019 11:00

Laura is a timeless classic, I think - Laura Ashley, Laura Ingalls, etc.
Gemma is dated, I think.

60secondfacetimer · 20/05/2019 11:00

I hate the name Laura there is quite a few about and Gemma is a proper 80s name, two of my cousins are called it lol.

dalmatianmad · 20/05/2019 10:58

Really dislike Gemma for no reason what so ever

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/05/2019 10:56
