I really like this name for a boy. What are people’s thoughts?
Pronounced Eye-ra

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It's a girl's name. Not for me because of the IRA.

User10fuckingmillion · 19/05/2019 13:48

Weirdly my first thought wasn’t IRA but I did want to add an n on the end to make it Iran Confused
It’s objectively nice but it really depends where you live.

dreichuplands · 19/05/2019 13:45

It is a perfectly reasonable name anywhere other than the UK, where it isn't a sensible choice.

BuffySummerss · 19/05/2019 13:25

It's a nice name. But you can't use it in the uk. Unfortunately it has to go in the pile of usable names like Isis, Ira, Myra etc

Linny88 · 19/05/2019 13:25

Sounds like Eira which is a Welsh girl’s name

SundayMorningSun · 19/05/2019 13:17

I quite like it, and associate it with (usually older) characters in American TV shows.

The obvious downsides have already been mentioned: people might think it's a girl's name, and in Britain it's too similar to IRA.

happyhillock · 19/05/2019 13:14

IRA. Its awful

IrishMamaMia · 19/05/2019 13:12

Not to my personal tastes (I'm also Irish!) but there are at least two young Ira's in my small neighbourhood. I think it's refreshing and a bit different.

CraicGalore · 19/05/2019 13:05

As a Jewish name it’s fine, but in UK it’s too much like IRA.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/05/2019 13:05

It sounds lovely, but I looked and read IRA before I realised it was in Names.

DerelictWreck · 19/05/2019 13:03

I'm surprised it's unfamiliar to many - quite popular in American. Ira Glass is the guy behind the podcast Serial, S-town, This American Life etc. I mean Serial was massive so I'd have thought people knew the name given it was at the start of every episode!

MillicentMartha · 19/05/2019 13:01

As a Jewish name it’s fine, but in UK it’s too much like IRA.

lanbro · 19/05/2019 12:59

Didn't Ira Levin write Rosemary's Baby? Presumably Jewish, but I have always thought it sounds more feminine than masculine

daisypond · 19/05/2019 12:55

It's a very Hebrew name. But people may think it's a girl's name - it's the A ending. And then there is the IRA...

Redact · 19/05/2019 12:50

I love it as a name. It's Hebrew and means watchful. I know it as a name, have came across a few in the US.

DramaAlpaca · 19/05/2019 12:45

It's hideous.

MashedSpud · 19/05/2019 12:45

Looks like IRA to me too.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 19/05/2019 12:45

Ira as in Gershwin. I like it.

YouJustDoYou · 19/05/2019 12:44

I read it as in the terrorist group IRA

kimlo · 19/05/2019 12:44

I love it.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 19/05/2019 12:43

I’m Irish so it will always look like IRA to me.

SuckingDieselFella · 19/05/2019 12:42

Sorry OP but it looks very like IRA. You don't want your child to go through life named after a terrorist organisation.

Mirali · 19/05/2019 12:41

Seen it a few times on US tv programmes. It's a Jewish name isn't it?

Drum2018 · 19/05/2019 12:40

All I think of on seeing that name is IRA so it would be a no from me.

klendraa · 19/05/2019 12:40

it’s a sweet name
