Noah

I love the name Noah for DS3 due in summer, but worry about it's popularity. I've been reading the thread about popular names with interest. I would normally avoid such a popular name.

How many little Noahs do you know? Will it date badly? Should I even care?

Why is naming a baby such hard work?!

I know 3 Noahs and I know LOADS of children. There’s only one in my DCs primary school.

Love Rowan by the way. One of my favourite names. Isaac is also nice and not hugely popular (I don’t think)

daisypond · 18/05/2019 06:03

See, I only know boys over 18 called Noah. To me it’s a late 90s name.

Kokeshi123 · 18/05/2019 00:01

I know some lovely boys called Noah, but yeah, faddy. I don't know any over about 15.

Proseccofuelled · 17/05/2019 20:55

Great point- wish the chart showed everything but I have to just appreciate not everyone is as obsessed with stats as me Grin

outvoid · 17/05/2019 15:33

Really not keen on it and it is very popular. I have moved towns recently and it’s just as popular in this town as it was where we previously lived. There’s at least one in every class, sometimes two or three. I have three DC in primary school and it’s the same in each of their year groups. Also have a couple of friends with Noah’s.

SallyWD · 17/05/2019 15:00

I work in a school and there's one Noah. I know one other Noah who's 6 and lives in America.

becca3210 · 17/05/2019 13:58

If I have a son I will definitely be pushing to name him Noah. I think it is the most gorgeous name Smile

SundayMorningSun · 17/05/2019 13:56

@Proseccofuelled Those charts can be useful, but can also be a bit deceptive, because they only show the top 100. It's not uncommon for a name to have a short time near the top of the charts, but otherwise settle around the 101-300 mark, or in the bottom of the top 100. Those names don't necessarily feel immediately dated.

There are lots of names with a pronounced 'peak' (or a pronounced trought) in popularity that people around here are always calling 'classic'/'timeless', such as:

Katherine
Emily
Emma
Hannah
Christopher
Matthew

So, in answer to the OP, Noah might start to feel dated, because it rose to popularity fairly quickly. But it's not straightforward to predict that.

In any case, it's being used for 1.2% of babies at the moment. Hardly the biggest deal.

sparklysunflower · 17/05/2019 13:49

Sorry but

sparklysunflower · 17/05/2019 13:49

Definitely not a classic! I don't know any men named Noah nut about 20 Noahs under age 20!

It will soon fall out of fashion imo.

daisypond · 17/05/2019 13:37

I wouldn’t say it’s classic - Possibly down to the very problematic story of Noah, which would put some off.

17caterpillars1mouse · 17/05/2019 13:23

It's a lovely name but is very popular

I know 3 (6, 4 and 2) but come across it very often

SmellMySmellbow · 17/05/2019 12:54

Faddy? I'd say it's a classic, it's ancient! It's like Samuel, I know of Noah's from all generations.

rainyfriday · 17/05/2019 12:43

That's my main worry with it sparklysunflower.

Daisy Eli would probably just be Eli. The only longer form I like is Elias, but I think I'd just go for Eli on its own.

I know one baby Noah. Although I also heard someone say that Ezra is the new Noah, make of that what you will!

sparklysunflower · 17/05/2019 11:55

Michael and Rowan are both great names. Noah feels much more 'faddy' to me.

daisyboocantoo · 17/05/2019 11:37

I love Flynn and also Eli. Would it be Elliott, and then shortened?

daisyboocantoo · 17/05/2019 11:36

I know many Noahs. It's very common where I live. There are 4 in our local Playgroup!

rainyfriday · 17/05/2019 11:08

Mikey was born nearly 20 years ago now (I was a teen mum and now a geriatric mum!) Michael wasn't particularly popular, nor was it a name I loved but I used it on the birth certificate as Mikey felt nicknamey and quite childish. He absolutely hates it when someone refers to him as Michael as he doesn't really associate it with himself, but he does like Mikey.

We must have very similar taste in names hardyboys! When I was having Rowan a couple of years ago I was 100% sure it was the right name, it's my favourite boys name ever.

I think Peter might be due a comeback, although I taught a 16 year old Peter last year and he was the only one I've ever taught.

I really like Christopher, along with Benjamin, Alexander and Joseph but realistically I will want to use a shorter form myself and I'm not keen on any of them.

My eldest (4) is Noah and he is the only one at his school! I know if one other Noah in our area so not overly popular here!!

Hailthelime · 17/05/2019 10:23

My 11 year old is a Noah. I still love the name. If I was having him now I would still call him Noah. There is a Noah 6 doors down from us who was in his year at school. His Mum and I talk about your Noah and my Noah. He is now at secondary school and there are no other Noah's in his year of 160 boys. When I come across other Noah's I always feel chuffed that we chose the name. Go for it! X

Proseccofuelled · 17/05/2019 09:51

Michael is definitely on the downward trend

Although ‘dated’ isn’t something that would stop me - one of my favourite boy names is Peter & that’s about the most dated name currently. I’m just a bit of a statistics geek Blush

Noah
daisypond · 17/05/2019 09:41

I actually don’t think Michael is dated - or at least it’s at the start of a curve for New Testament or saints’ names. Peter and Christopher and Nicholas are names that have been mentioned recently. Michael is a name from my generation- born in the ‘60s - whose time has come again.

hardyboys · 17/05/2019 09:25

I love Noah! If I had a 4th son I think this would definitely be his name.

I also have a Rowan...

SmellMySmellbow · 17/05/2019 09:24

Love Noah. Only one in the 60 kids in DS' reception class and I know no others.
