Fwiw, I had never heard of Chester meaning molester till this thread. So it must be quite specific to certain places.

No, I don't think the child molester thing is anything to do with the name itself. It must just be rhyming slang. It's the only male name I can think of that rhymes with molester, so someone has obviously decided to use it as slang. It doesn't mean anyone thinks people names Chester are more likely to be pedophiles.

It's the same as Charlie being slang for cocaine isn't it? Or Pippa meaning wank in Spanish slang. Mary means vulva in some parts of England. People still use those names no problem.

@CupOhTea No I don't mind people disliking it. You'll never find a name to everyone's taste. Slightly alarmed by people saying it only makes them think of child molesters and peadophiles though. Definitely not what I want people to think of when meeting my son!

It's so subjective though op. You like it a lot, so who really cares what we think? I don't think it's diabolical, by any stretch. I just don't like it. It's just the sound. There is something a bit silly and cartoon-y about it to me. But it's a fairly mild dislike.

There's some serious hate here! Interesting. We liked that it was an old name, not made up but not over-used. Worked for all ages. Strong, classic but not overly common.

I really dislike it. I don't like the sound but also it's a slightly silly/caricature name.
HOWEVER it is YOUR choice. Some names I like my friends /family/ absolutely hate
You need to do what you think is best

People are just giving their "HONEST opinions", because you asked for them. You might not like my dcs' names if you heard them. Who really cares Smile? I certainly don't.

Unless it's something so odd / unpleasant that he will almost certainly hate having the name and having to explain it all the time. Chester is not really* out there or truly unpleasant. It just isn't everyone's cup of tea. No name is. If you want a name everyone loves, you probably won't find it!

I wonder if it's a bit dependent on accent... I can imagine it being nice in an American accent, but not in some of the accents where we live (near London). Chess-tah just isn't as nice as Chess-terr. To me anyway.

Maybe worth trying it out in the accents local to you op?

At all depends on your surname..I can't imagine a baby being called Chester for some reason? don't know why!
But I can imagine a little boy in private school being called Chester.

I don't think MN is ever the right place to ask on baby names! The majority always hate them for some reason!
Would you shorten it when he is born?
