We're looking for a timeless girls name - what are your thoughts on these;

Margot
Olive
Cecelia (Cece)
Matilda
Etta
Florence

Margot is cool, Cecelia also (i would shorten to cecy instead of cece). Like Florence as well. Etta might be a no if the terrorist group thing is true! Matilda great and literary. Olive I don’t love probably because of olive oyl...

I don't think most of those are timeless at all as they are names that have only recently come back into fashion. Timeless is surely a name that is in continual use and not subject to the vagaries of trends - Emma, for example.

I don't really like any of them except Florence but Olive is especially awful.

Margot - like, was DH first choice for no 2, but I didn’t want to use with our surname
Olive - loved this for a few years, seem to be a few cropping up
Cecelia (Cece) - like
Matilda - love, our name for upcoming no 2, was put off for ages by it’s popularity surge, but I’ve decided I don’t care anymore
Etta - not my cup of tea
Florence - beautiful

I’m not sure I’d put any in “timeless” but then I guess it depends on your interpretation

My favourites are Matilda and Florence. I think Margot and Cecelia (which are also nice) are the most timeless. Other than Margot and Cecelia I think the others will date to this decade ( and previous times 100 years ago) when they were in fashion.

I absolutely love Margot, Olive and Matilda and lime Florence. I was actually seriously considering Matilda for my daughter due in July but it's become much too popular in Australia unfortunately.

I love Etta but I’m a Jazz fan - not sure I’d be cool / brave enough to use it as a full name so I’d probably go for something like Juliet / Henrietta / Bernadette / Claudette / Odette

This is difficult: Cecelia is pretty but imo Margot just pips the rest.

Oops it didn’t load - Elizabeth - but if that’s not what you’re after then there are probably lots of beautiful classics to choose from. My favourites are:
Olivia
Matilda
Martha (I met one nn Marnie which I thought was adorable)
Jemima
Susannah

If I’ve uploaded this correctly.....this should show how the name will definitely be linked to a specific age group - it’s not something that bothered me & I love the name Matilda anyway - but in case it’s something you don’t want.

What do you mean by timeless? Only that list are exceptionally ‘now’ names meaning they will sound like Colin / Barbara etc to the next generation - so to me the opposite of timeless.

Or do you mean classic?

I particularly like Etta, but maybe as a nn for Henrietta rather than by itself? Either way, I think it's very elegant and pretty, as well as timeless. Matilda is getting very common now, and there are generally thousands of Olivia's as well. Doesn't stop them from being nice names but if you're looking for more unusual ones maybe not them.

Florence, Margot and Olive are my favourites from your list. All of the names are reasonably popular at the moment but not overused - I've yet to come across more than one of each in a class at school. I prefer names that don't end in an 'uh' or 'ee' sound, hence my shortlist.

I Have a Matilda so obviously that's the best😁
Margot - good prefer Margaux spelling as Margot reminds me of Maggot
Olive - love the retro vibe with this also the symbolic meaning
Cecelia (Cece) - like the Nn choice, good to grow up with
Etta - too Nicknamey imo
Florence - sweet prefer Flora
