If you named your DC after a concept (Faith, Charity etc)

...did you do it because you like the sentiment or just because you liked the name?

Really just a curiosity post sparked by someone saying on Twitter today that Liz Truss named her daughter Liberty because she’s such an ardent believer in freedom and democracy...

I know someone with a name that suggests a political perspective her parents are fully against (think pro Irish independence) but they really loved it so went for it anyway! Was wondering how much commitment went into concept based names

Both. Grace because we liked it and also the concept of undeserved favour or gift. Not particularly the physical idea of gracefulness though that's nice too. The name doesn't define the child but rather how we feel about the child if that makes any sense.

Also liked Honor and Verity.

My youngest's name means dreamer. She slept most of the time after her birth. Turns out she had jaundice and that's why she slept so much.

Anyone remember which Terry Pratchett novel has a family where the girls are named after virtues (Patience, Chastity etc) and due to a slight misunderstanding of the concept the boys end up called after vices (Anger, Covetousness & Bestiality)?

I think Schadenfreude is a lovely name for a girl

There was a little girl in Pets at Home when I was once at the vets up to all sorts. She fiddled with this, picked up and dropped that and her father kept on bellowing "Temperance". Obviously didn't live up to her name.

I have to admit that I really liked the idea of Patience for a 2nd girl. Imogen Maria Patience to be specific... would have been so apt for my first though...

Temperance was on my list. The meaning (self restraint) is perhaps a little dry but I still love the name. It just didn't suit dd.

I like Temperance and Constance but probably not brave enough to use either. I also like Virginia but would never use it. I think placing such virtue on a woman's sexual status is awful. But that's a whole other thread!

I constantly feel like I have to 'act' in a way that my name suggests!

I love Honour as a name, and I suspect that (like faith) you can adapt that to most people.

Imagine the stress of being called Chastity!

I suppose another in that vein is Serena. We’ve considered it for a DD but if she takes after me it wouldn’t really work

Oh Felicity is a good one - I always forget that it’s a virtue as well as a name.

Ds was going to be Felicity had he been a girl. To be fair he would have suited it as he is very cheerful!

That's another one. It's absolutely beautiful but generally speaking children aren't known for it, so for most of their childhood it wouldn't suit.
I'm imagining had I chose this for my dd.
I can't get over "success" that's something to live up to, right there.

One of my DD’s has a name in this sort of vein (none of those mentioned) and we chose if owrtlt for the name itself and partly for the meaning. So far she has lived up to it!

I think Faith is great as you can have faith in lots of things. It can be because you have faith in her, it doesn't have to be religious.

I like hope as the ones I have met were all named for similar reasons

I suppose I come unstuck with charity - might not be. Really no to chastity, honour, just no.

My dd is called Hope. She was born after 5 years of ttc, 8 iuis and 1 ivf cycle.

@jackstini glad you had your Hope baby even if he didn’t deliver on the right sex for the name!

It’s a good point raised upthread that often DC don’t quite live up to the name they’ve been given!

I suppose if I were an atheist Faith would be a bad call!

If DS had been a girl his middle name was going to be Hope and we chose it specifically after having 2 mc
