If you named your DC after a concept (Faith, Charity etc)

...did you do it because you like the sentiment or just because you liked the name?

Really just a curiosity post sparked by someone saying on Twitter today that Liz Truss named her daughter Liberty because she’s such an ardent believer in freedom and democracy...

I know someone with a name that suggests a political perspective her parents are fully against (think pro Irish independence) but they really loved it so went for it anyway! Was wondering how much commitment went into concept based names Smile

I was very tempted by Grace, because of the meaning (in the religious sense of an undeserved gift/kindness), but put off largely by how popular it is and the suspicion that most people here/now think of grace in terms of elegance (as I think comments on this thread show!).

I love Comfort and Gifty.

I don’t think they put an expectation or a demand on the child - to me, that’s not the right way of looking at them. Sometimes they say something about how the parent feels about the child in the abstract (“this child is a gift/ having this child restored my hope” etc), sometimes they say something about who the parent hopes that child will be, but tbh that’s equally true when people start considering ‘how will my child fit in amongst their peers?’ ‘what will this name mean on their CV?’.

I also really like the Zimbabwean suffix -more - Trymore, Lovemore etc.

I don’t really like the concept of virtue name. Why slap this kind of burden on a child ? I know most if not all names have some kind of meaning but not quite so obvious (how many people actually know that George means "farmer," and Alexander means "protector of man"?)

If I ever named a child one of these names it would have to be solely because I really like the sound, and even then...

I know a Joy who is miserable as sin and a Grace who is clumpy and ungainly.

I think names like that are very hard to live up to!

TheHammock · 07/06/2019 07:04

@janus good call. I think joy is lighter in those circs.

TheHammock · 07/06/2019 07:03

I met a Temperence once. She was v posh. Not in to fashion.

Repentence is godawful. Smite the vicar!

TuppenceTwo · 06/06/2019 23:38

I read an old local newspaper article where the Vicar wrote in about a child he’d baptised called Repentance Shock Grin

My b/g twins both have virtue names. We chose them because we liked the name, and with the boy it was a family name, rather than the virtue. They are not something like Grace though which, as said above, could be unfortunate if you weren't.

motortroll · 20/05/2019 23:07

I taught a boy called blessing. He was not one!!

My middle girl has faith as a middle name because I like it. But I recently (she's 10!) realised that as she has a biblical first name it does make it sound a bit religious which we are not! Still love it though and it's apt for her now as we have Faith she'll turn out alright in the end Grin

Janus · 20/05/2019 22:52

I too was going to give my daughter a middle name of Hope after a m/c and loads of test after trouble then conceiving. In the end we didn’t and I’m glad as I don’t want to always associate her with that.
I always liked the name Joy but mostly from watching ‘Drop the Dead Donkey’ where Joy was so wonderfully miserable!! (Have to be a certain age to remember that!!)

Willowkoko · 20/05/2019 22:48

I knew of a man called Wise, he was one of the coolest men I’ve ever met, he could play 5/6 instruments and was extremely well spoken.

AlphaJura · 20/05/2019 22:40

I know a boy with middle name Miracle. It's to do with the circumstances surrounding him coming into the world so I can see why they named him that. I don't know, but heard of a baby girl called Dream recently.

Yoozanaim · 19/05/2019 21:58

I have two virtue/concept-names children, chosen for both the meaning and I just love the look/sound of the name, and that they aren't much used. Both have more mainstream shortenings that can be used should they not want to introduce themselves with their concept names.

rosesandveg · 19/05/2019 20:17

My daughter is a Christmas baby, she's called Merry, short for Meredith. And at the moment she lives up to it! We wanted to make sure she had another option to use, however, in case she felt Merry didn't suit in the future, which is why we gave her Meredith. I actually use both interchangeably now.

ktjerl · 19/05/2019 11:00

I have a Hope and a Grace. Grace is a family name. I didn't realise it was going to become so popular though. I chose them because i liked the names rather than anything to do with the meaning.

BellMcEnd · 19/05/2019 10:50

@99bb or Chastity..........Grin

99bb · 19/05/2019 08:26

Whether or not I like the names aside, I’d be more likely to go with a concept like Liberty, than something that might describe a person, which I don’t think I’d ever have the guts for. I know if I named my kid Grace, she’d end up being incredibly clumsy!

Littlepond · 19/05/2019 04:23

My daughter is Grace. I just love the name!

AlliKaneErikson · 19/05/2019 04:16

I’ve come across a girl called Miracle too (great if you’re singing the opening song of Matilda!).

CaptainCallisto · 18/05/2019 09:10

There were boy/girl Ghanaian siblings in my year at uni named Redemption and Celerity. Redemption went by Dem, and got really cross if you used his full name, which made me think he wasn't particularly comfortable with it.

brokenpromisesorlies · 18/05/2019 08:35

‘Hope’ - my own wonderful dm has died and she gave me hope that life would be ok again.

AlphaJura · 18/05/2019 08:33

My ds was watching a YouTube video the other day and there was a little boy called Wisdom. Quite like that although I don't know if I'd be brave enough to use it.

MadameJosephine · 18/05/2019 08:31

I’ve never heard of Temerity as a name before, I love it. I wanted Felicity for DD but her dad hated it. I also love Temperance and Clemency but wouldn’t be brave enough to use either and if her dad didn’t like Felicity he certainly wasn’t going to go for either of those!

When working in Ghana I met lots of people with virtue names but the ones I remember the most were two young men named Courage and Awesome

captainblonde · 18/05/2019 08:17

DC goes to school with a 'Beauty'. This might make me sound shallow but the whilst the child is a lovely girl she is not beautiful in physical terms. It must be a hard name to carry off for her in today's world where people are so much judged by their physical appearance.

I think it is always better to stay clear of these kind of concept names.

whatausername · 17/05/2019 23:50

Well, with a father like that the girl never stood a chance. Highly doubt she had any real sex education

QOD · 17/05/2019 23:04

An American acquaintances Pastor has a dd called ‘Chastity’ who got pregnant in a Bible Belt state at 14
