MaLittleBubbas · 12/05/2019 12:35

hi- previously made thread 'sister for Violet', and after a lot of lovely suggestions, nothing beat Ingrid or Amelie!
I prefer Amelie but DH prefers Ingrid, but we can't decide on one!
also, I forgot to mention she's four days old and I'm feeling a bit stressed because she needs a name Blush
Big sister is Violet.
Which do you prefer and why? thank you x

Good choice 😊🌷

Congratulations OP. Good choice 😁

DramaAlpaca · 13/05/2019 20:07

If you love a name so much you'd regret it if you didn't use it, it means it's the right name. Congratulations Smile

Congrats!

MaLittleBubbas · 13/05/2019 19:42

Hi everyone, I think we’ve decided on Amelie! Thank you for the suggestions everyone, but I just love Amelie so much I’d regret if I called her anything else. Thank you :) x

Ingrid of the two although I prefer PP suggestions of Imelda or Astrid

I’m really not a fan of Amelie, it gets lost in a sea of Emily/Amelia/Ellie type names and still sounds a bit frilly. It probably goes better with Violet because they’re both softer names, but they won’t always be “violet and sister”, for the vast majority of their lives they won’t be seen as a pair of siblings because they’ll be individual adults with their own friends, colleagues etc. As long as a pair doesn’t sound awful together I don’t think it especially matters whether sibling names go together

aibutohavethisusername · 13/05/2019 18:43

Amelie

PropagandaMachine · 13/05/2019 17:26

Ingrid. You can get your teeth into it. Or Astrid, as others have said.

These days you can't throw a stone without hitting an Amelia/Amelie/Milly/Emily/Emilia. Yes I know they're not the same name, but they just all meld together into a big, twee, dull insipid name soup.

Pegaroo · 13/05/2019 11:40

Ingrid. Amelie is just a little bit boring since so many people have used it.

tdam · 13/05/2019 11:38

Definitely Amelie. Ingrid has a very harsh sound in my opinion and doesn't go with Violet nearly as well as Amelie does. I do however like the suggestion of Astrid, it's a great alternative to Ingrid.

Also, I'm not so sure why people say Amelie is 'overdone' - it seems from another poster's comment that it's 70 something in the UK and here in Australia it's not even in the top 100. I've never met one. Also, people lumping it in with Amelia and Emily as evidence of its popularity makes no sense to me - it's a different name!

BrightOink · 13/05/2019 03:21

Amelie. The couple that I know (not common around here, most likely hear of Emilia / Lily/ Milly) are absolutely lovely. Fiery, confident, popular. Suited them as they've grown. 1 prefers 'Ammie' as a nn, 1 is 'Meelie/Meels'

Aomame83 · 13/05/2019 03:12

Definitely Ingrid. It's a strong name and unusual without being weird.

If you go with Amelie, she'll just be one of many variations in her class, Amelia, Amelie, Emily etc...
I loved Amelie years ago because of the movie, but it's just everywhere. The name Ingrid has popped up on our baby girl name list for in a few months time.

Joeybee · 13/05/2019 03:05

Ingrid. Love the name Ingrid and it's so underused.

Amelie is a bit too popular, it's sound a a bit boring to me now and too cutesy.

HeronLanyon · 13/05/2019 02:59

Sorry missed other Astrid suggestions. It’s a good idea eh ?

HeronLanyon · 13/05/2019 02:58

Ingrid is an amazing name. Love it.
However I think it doesn’t sit well with violet. With the two names it sounds more plain/harder iyswim.
Amelie - not fond of it. Twee. Pretty but cutesy.
Good luck op.
What about Astrid ?

YemenRoadYemen · 13/05/2019 02:51

Wow, they are such different names!

I would choose Ingrid, as Amelie has well and truly had its day (trying to be nice).

I have a friend who pronounces it In-grid, as opposed to Ing-grid, in case that influences you.

Like others, I was also going to suggest Astrid.

MercyBodle · 13/05/2019 02:25

Just to add reasons, Ingrid is strong, smart and individual, and suits all ages, and is not over-used, and is very easy to spell and pronounce.
Amelie is nice enough, but softer and frillier and would only suit some people whereas I feel anyone could be an Ingrid. It's also more popular and would tend to date to a particular decade more.

MercyBodle · 13/05/2019 02:22

I much prefer Ingrid - great name!

Christmassaussage · 13/05/2019 00:29

I wouldn't go for either.

I nearly named my daughter Amelia rose because I love the name but it's too common.

My mother's name was Ingrid. She wasn't a nice person - but we nearly went for Isabelle.

In the end we named her Jennifer! We were 10 days late deciding on a name so don't let anyone rush you. Most royal babies take a while to be named too so don't worry about it! Go with whatever but bully proof it including any initials the names spell!

IfNotNow1 · 13/05/2019 00:27

Astrid. Makes me think of Pippi Longstocking.

girlsname · 13/05/2019 00:21

Amelie, and despite what people say- it's hardly 'common' as it's only number 72 in popularity.

Ingrid just sounds really harsh and not very pretty for a girl

Rainandwine · 13/05/2019 00:06

Astrid is such a cool mix of both

DramaAlpaca · 12/05/2019 23:54

Ingrid, by a long way.

Amelie only sounds nice if you happen to have a French accent.

Someone upthread suggested Astrid as a 50/50 mix of the two, and I think so too.

Sophronia · 12/05/2019 23:46
