Friend of a friend picked our name

We have picked a baby name we both like.

However, a friend of my best friend has already picked this name for her daughter who is a few months old.

I've never met this friend (although they've been friends for around 10 years). The friend lives in New Zealand and is unlikely to return to the UK (hubby is from NZ). Even if she does return to the UK, it is likely to be around 200 miles from where we like. The name is in the top 100 (around 40-70) depending on the chart.

Is it unreasonable of me to be considering the name?

This is a joke, right?

TheFaerieQueene · 12/05/2019 22:24

🤣

Isth · 12/05/2019 22:23

Ffs 😂

KnitterOfSocks · 12/05/2019 22:21

I know 5 children called Matilda who are all born within 12 months of each other. It isn't weird at all. Some of the parents are aware of each other, some aren't. I can tell all the little Matildas apart and have definitely not looked into bulk buying personalised gifts to save money

Leelaseye · 12/05/2019 22:18

In the nicest possible way, that would be a batshit reason to not use a name!

SamanthaBrique · 12/05/2019 16:24

This is a wind up, surely??

flumpybear · 12/05/2019 15:51

Is this a joke? Use the name!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/05/2019 15:29

Friend of a friend AKA the Monkeys uncle. I'd still use it. Its a total non issue.

blackcatclocks · 12/05/2019 13:30

@TheSultanofPingu 😂😂😂

TheSultanofPingu · 12/05/2019 13:25

Better not use it. One day you might go to New Zealand on holiday and bump into them. Imagine the embarrassment

blackcatclocks · 12/05/2019 13:18

😂🙄🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

PlatypusLeague · 12/05/2019 12:36

Definitely fine to use the name.

Strawberry2017 · 12/05/2019 12:31

I think you are seriously overthinking this.
Worry about things that matter not that a random stranger has used the name you like.

NewSchoolNewName · 12/05/2019 12:26

I wouldn’t give this a second thought.

You’re talking about someone you’ve never met who lives on the other side of the world. What they’ve chosen for their baby name is completely irrelevant.

OneToThree · 12/05/2019 12:23

This has made me chuckle. You get people asking about using the same name as a cousin, but a friend of a friend I wouldn’t give a second thought to

MikeUniformMike · 12/05/2019 12:00

If it is in the top 70 names, your child may be one of many with the name in his or her peer group. Even if you choose an unusual name, you can't guarantee they won't end up in the same circle as someone else with the same name. You might choose the most popular name in the country and find that your child is the only one you know, although that is unlikely. Choose a name you like, and will always like.

Littlechocola · 12/05/2019 11:30

call the baby carpet if you want no one else to share the name

Bumblebeesmum · 12/05/2019 11:28

People are so weird about names these days. The trend of being unique is fine but it doesn’t make it ‘your name’. In previous generations half a family would be Mary John etc which is why some would be nicknamed Jack Polly etc. I can understand why people might enjoy the unique trend - but I doubt you invented the name so it’s not ‘your name’. Someone you’ve never met has also used it. So?

itswinetime · 12/05/2019 11:25

I hate to break it to you probably more than one person you don't know in new Zealand has used that name. Same goes for Australia, America and the U.K. and many more countries I'm sure Wink

It's fine to use stop overthinking.

Icklepup · 12/05/2019 11:22

Use it!

UCOinanOCG · 12/05/2019 09:31

I am not even certain why you have given a moments headspace to this. Use the name you love.

kayvade · 12/05/2019 09:21

friend of a friend in new zealand! use it.

Usually these threads take my breath away. You can have situations where one set of grandparents end up with two grandchildren with the same name!! and yet there will be people on the thread saying ''use it your choice your baby''. I try to consider the feelings of other people involved but in your situation you should definitely use the name!

BlueMerchant · 12/05/2019 09:18

Seriously?
Surely it's a non- issue

StickOfRhubarb · 12/05/2019 09:18

I’ve just had a look at the list to see the sorts of names that are on the list and they are definitely popular
Bella
Penelope
Maisie
Luna
Holly
That sort of thing.

flowery · 12/05/2019 09:18

You’re thinking of not using a name you like because someone you’ve never met the other side of the world has also used it? Confused
