I've taught an Astrid and know an Astrid. Both awesome people, and a great name!

Kokeshi123 · 13/05/2019 12:12

It's a wonderful name. Would shorten to Addie.

tdam · 13/05/2019 11:29

Love Astrid, would consider it very seriously for my baby girl due soon but my partner isn't a fan unfortunately.

JeantheHipster · 13/05/2019 08:16

I have an Astrid. My parents and PIL don't like it but most other people seem to like it (or they are not rude enough to say they hate it to my face Grin)

In terms of popularity there were 122 born in 2017 in England and Wales which made it the 376th most popular name so there's almost zero chance of there being 3 in a class. I think it's highly likely to have risen in popularity in 2018 but not to top 10 level. I do find that when people are first introduced to dd they say to me something along the line of 'my friend's cousin has just had an Astrid' I. E they know of an Astrid rather than having actually met one. I didn't have this with my eldest dc so I do find this odd and therefore assume it is becoming more popular.

It's true that names can be common in a certain area and by default people then think they are popular. I know 3 Clementines within the same village - it's only slightly more popular than Astrid. This area is also completely overrun with Imogens but I've never come across any Mias, or Lily's in my area despite 4 years worth of playgroups etc.

MooBaaLaLaLa · 12/05/2019 20:18

Definitely depends where you live, I'm up north, go to lots of baby and toddler groups and haven't met a single Astrid yet.

Carouselfish · 12/05/2019 19:29

Lovely. Just don't watch that particular episode of the US office.

GMtoBe · 12/05/2019 19:22

One of my all time favourite girls names. Was on my list for DD but DH vetoed it

CrinolineQueen · 12/05/2019 19:06

I'd put it in the same category as Gertrude.

CrinolineQueen · 12/05/2019 19:04

Really dislike it. Would go so far as to say it's an ugly name.

Nicketynac · 12/05/2019 19:01

Oh and Ikea have a range called Arstid

Nicketynac · 12/05/2019 19:01

We have an Astrid. We call her asteroid 😍 or a sort of made up name which was what she called herself when she was learning to to speak.
Very much depends where you live as I have only come across one other Astrid (in real life, seen some on tv etc) since having her four years ago, and that was last week.
The main issue we have with it is people mishearing it as Ashley or similar, mainly because she is the first one people have met. A few people asked us how we made it up and were surprised that it was a real name.
A midwife thought we were calling her Asterix. I can imagine the chat in the staff room

sweetsaltypopcorn · 12/05/2019 19:00

I'm going against the grain here to say that I don't like it Blush I think it's really ugly-sounding!

Clownfish123 · 12/05/2019 18:52

Azzy is a cool nickname! The one thing that put me off Astrid is the lack of nickname but that's a good one. Love the name Astrid.

Astraj · 12/05/2019 18:18

My name is Astra so very close to Astrid, my family call me Azzy, only piss take I got when I was growing up regarding my name was car related Smile

toottootchuggachugga · 12/05/2019 18:01

Gorgeous. Prettier than Ingrid, with that clear, classic vibe that Diana/Helen/Serena have. A welcome balm from all the vowelly potpourri girls names around (lilly/evie/poppy etc). Don't worry too much about popularity, it's never going to be super-common.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 12/05/2019 17:54

I've never ever heard of an Astrid being called Ass!

I did know twins called Astrid and Ingrid growing up, and we all called them Asterix and Ignorant. I think that's about the worst you have to worry about.

IceRebel · 12/05/2019 17:01

I love it. However as others have said it's had a huge surge in popularity, which isn't surprising as it is a lovely name.

meepmoop · 12/05/2019 16:53

@WhatAGreatDay that had crossed my mind that it might get shortened to ass. It's partly why I asked on here to see how many would say it

Another vote for "love it" here

WeeM · 12/05/2019 16:23

I like it, when I was growing up there was a girl called Astrid and I always thought she was really cool and kind of exotic!

WhatAGreatDay · 12/05/2019 16:21

I don't like it due partly to the harsh "strid" sound. I also heard a father calling his daughter Astrid saying "Ass, stop when you get to the corner". "Ass wait for me". It's a really awful short version.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 12/05/2019 11:14

Its my dm's name and I love it but never considered it as a name for my children.
That's changed now, if this DC is a girl it's a fore runner for the middle name

MercyBodle · 12/05/2019 11:07

It has been growing on me. I love Ingrid and Sigrid so I think Astrid has potential... I love girl names that are clearly feminine but not frilly and this ticks the boxes.

Bumblebeesmum · 12/05/2019 11:04

I used to hate it but I seem to have warmed to it as now I think it’s quite nice

Linny88 · 12/05/2019 09:23

Lovely name - it’s becoming increasingly common in east London....I work with under 5s and visit various nurseries and it is now common to have an Astrid at each nursery.
