I'd love honest opinions on the boys name Woody as a nn for Edward please? He would be brother to Albert (Bertie) and Florence (Florrie). Don't know sex but currently really stuck on the boy options! Girl would be Nancy. Thanks all Smile

Woody is short for Edward. I know of two completely unrelated Woody's, one in his 60s and one 4 and the are both Edward's. Also with the erection thing. Throughout my teenage years and 8 years of teaching teenagers I haven't come across a Woody being an erection and have just asked my friends who haven't either. Maybe it is an area thing or an outdated term.

I would however think of Tesco's if you had a Florence and Fred!

Nooo you can’t call your baby erection

Edward has lots of lovely nicknames - what about Ned or Noddy?

Do you like Edwin? Winnie is still a very unusual choice but not an erection?

JenSFP · 08/05/2019 07:52

Thanks everyone - I think we've well and truly parked woody for now! So helpful to have all your input. Far too many of you associate it with erections and I just couldn't do that to my son!!!! BlushBlushbackto the drawing board xx

You know a woody is an erection ? And it isn't short for Edward at all.

coconutcurls · 08/05/2019 06:24

I went to primary school with an Edward known as Woody. Pretty sure he's just Ed now, but I didn't think twice about it as an under 11 😂

Complainingagain · 08/05/2019 06:20

Woody means erection around here (South East England)

JenSFP · 07/05/2019 17:00

@PinkDaffodil2 I think that's why I'm so unsure and keen for opinions! It's clearly not a diminutive of Edward, but I'm not keen on Woodrow. Pretty sure all the erection comments have unnerved me too much to risk it anyway!

Woody is a shortening for Woodrow like Woody Guthrie but not really for Edward.

I love Woody and you can nn him anything you like. I called my daughter Charlotte so that we could call her Charlie.

JenSFP · 07/05/2019 16:55

Yes he is LittleandOften

Thanks elephantmarch. Love your suggestions. Esp barnaby but OH not keen. We will probably go for Wilfred (Fred) but so helpful to have some extra food for thought

Your eldest children have lovely names. I think peter needs a Renaissance, Christopher (kit), Philip (pip) Samuel, digby, barnaby?

PlatypusLeague · 07/05/2019 16:16

Wilfred (Fred) is great - go for this one.

I dislike Woody and don't associate it with the name Edward. I wouldn't pronounce Edward as Ed-wood.

LittleAndOften · 07/05/2019 16:12

Isn't Zoe Ball's son called Woody?

Aquamarine1029 · 07/05/2019 16:10

Oh God no. Woody means erection.

RuthW · 07/05/2019 12:20

Lovely as long as it's Edward on BC.

JenSFP · 07/05/2019 12:20

Thank you ~ I love Teddy have a cousin I'm really close to whose already got that name so hoping to find something different.

I wouldn’t want to be a teenage boy growing up with the name Woody!

I don’t think it goes with your other kids names either

Fred is much better!

Thanks all. Nobody I have asked so far has made this erection connotation!! But I obvs don't want to risk that Blushwould be awful. Shame as I love the name but just not sure it's enough of an ACTUAL name you know? Aside from the erection problemShock. Thoughts on Wilfred (Fred)?
