Zelda - how 'out there'?

DH and I apparently do not agree on any girl names. I mean ANY. Apart from maybe this one. My only doubts are that it's a bit too off-the-wall. I want to avoid anything top ten/massively popular - but not to the extent of everyone who hears it thinking "you're called what now?!"

I guess I'm less interested in people's opinions (it's always a question of taste, and I definitely LIKE it) than how weird you think it is ( if it's at all possible to distinguish those two things).

So where would you place it on a scale of 1 (Emily/Olivia/simple/classic/boring) to 10 (Hepzibah/Andromeda/unusual/mad)?

I immediately think of Fitzgerald and 1920s. I wouldn't have known the gaming connection. I think it's usable - and hard to rate on your scale - maybe a 5 as it's definitely not boring or over-used, but doesn't seem real weird to me either.

It’s the name of the neuro surgeon that saved dh’s life when I was pg with dc2. Thankfully I had a boy.

PBobs · 07/05/2019 07:02

I would never think gamer. I know a teenager called Zelda and she's absolutely lovely. One of the loveliest kids I know. I don't think it's a particularly out there name.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 06/05/2019 23:58

Love it. But then, I'm Zelda mad so I'm biased Grin

Sybelline · 06/05/2019 23:33

the rotating twenties

Grin
tdam · 06/05/2019 23:33

Oops, I didn't see others had already mentioned this! Also, *roaring, not 'rotating'!

tdam · 06/05/2019 23:31

I like Zelda, I think because it makes me think of Zelda Fitzgerald (F Scott Fitzgerald's wife) and the rotating twenties. I would be a little nervous to use it though, for the same reason as you. On your scale I suppose I'd place it around 6-7? I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing though...

CaitlinsYellowSocks · 06/05/2019 23:25

I thought Fitzgerald so don't think it's that out there - maybe 5/6?

littlebillie · 06/05/2019 22:47

Zelda Fitzgerald socialite from 1920 (Scott Fitzgerald's wife) cool name

Calixtine · 06/05/2019 22:22

I like it but it’s definitely closer to Andromeda than Olivia to me. Still, it’s short, simple, familiar and unambiguous in terms of spelling and pronunciation. If the gaming and Terrahawks connections don’t bother you, I think it’s fine to use.

MintChocAddict · 06/05/2019 22:17

I'm clearly the same age as the other Terrahawks posters. She scared the living daylights out of me.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 06/05/2019 22:12

Love it, it was a real name long before the games, but the games are so good that if anything it adds to its kudos. I definately would.

wizzler · 06/05/2019 22:06

I immediately thought Nintendo !

How about Zinnia. It's similarly unusual,?

Bumblebeesmum · 06/05/2019 22:02

7-8 on a scale of ‘out there’

Carpetburns · 06/05/2019 21:42

Witch

NameChanginator · 06/05/2019 21:26

what about Anaïs, Isolde, Simone, Mina, something of that ilk?
DH doesn't like Anais, I don't like Isolde, neither of us like Simone. We both love Mina but it sounds too similar to the first part of our surname. Believe me, if it's a girl's name we have considered it! Grin

newtlover · 06/05/2019 21:16

easy to spell and pronounce, good points
whereas Anais often mis-spelt and mis pronounced, even by the parents who chose it, according to a recent thread

pineapplepatty · 06/05/2019 21:13

Gamers. Not dancers!

pineapplepatty · 06/05/2019 21:12

Not crazy but I'd think you were massive dancers

namewobble · 06/05/2019 21:07

If that's the zone you're in, what about Anaïs, Isolde, Simone, Mina, something of that ilk?

(Go for Zelda, if you like it though)

NameChanginator · 06/05/2019 21:03

The gaming connection doesn't particularly bother me, but I'm completely ignorant of video games do I can't really judge how the names sounds in that context. To me, it's: roaring 20s, intelligent, bit tragic but on a sort of wronged-woman, feisty, exotic way. I don't know whether other people would get "fairy princess" or "street fighter" or something in between the two or what!

OP posts:
Sophronia · 06/05/2019 21:03

I think it’s fine. I wouldn’t think of the games.

newtlover · 06/05/2019 20:54

apparently the man who wrote the games named the character after Zelda Fitzgerald (DS informs me)
I'd rate it at 7, quite acceptable score

zen1 · 06/05/2019 20:49

I quite like it, but my Nintendo-obsessed DC has made me only see it in gaming connotations.

strongandlong · 06/05/2019 20:45

I think Fitzgerald first too.

I know a (lovely) 13yo Zelda.

I'd score it 5/10. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce. An excellent name.
