Name regret... but she's 3!

We had picked out 2 names when I was pregnant with my daughter. One of them was the name we would have used if our son was a girl, so had obviously loved the name enough. I suffered some complications after birth which resulted in me not seeing my baby for 3 days. By this point, DP had announced the name to everyone - the name we had loved for our son too. He said he was sure we would have chosen that name because she looked just like this name and it suited her perfectly.

I was happy with the name. However... I've never ever called her by her full name, always a nickname derived from the full name. And the older she gets, the less I like the full name. The nickname suits her perfectly. The full name is very frilly and feminine which isnt my daughter at all.

Also my brother calls her a horrible nickname from the full name as a joke and I hate it and feel she's now going to be picked on if people know her full name.

ARGHHHH

Your brother is a twat...
That name is stunning,. She won't have another in the class.

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 02/05/2019 08:44

Juno is great. I quite like Juniper Willow as well, though not really my style - I definitely wouldn't have said it's frilly and feminine (I was expecting something like Clementine or Seraphina), more strong and cool - but I would definitely get rid of the hyphen (officially, if you can).

Have a sharp word with your brother and tell him to grow up and have a bit of respect. I wouldn't let my sons get away with this sort of nonsense, and they're 13 and 11.

Downunderduchess · 02/05/2019 08:42

Love the name - all of it!

BattenburgIsland · 02/05/2019 07:43

Juniper not Junioer!

BattenburgIsland · 02/05/2019 07:42

Junioer Willow is gorgeous! And Juno is a cool nickname!
Dont worry about your stupid brother... tbh people will find anything for any name. I've got a really big standard name which youd think wouldn't rhyme with anything and yet at school a few people used to call me a horrible nickname based on my name (think Man-Abble for Annabel) ... lol kids are just dicks!
Dont let it ruin the name for you.
I think Juniper Willow is great because it has so many options for her to use as she grows older... maybe one day she will feel a bit more floaty feminine and want to use the whole thing.. or maybe she wont and shell just stick with Juno, but it's good to have the choice!
I have an old friend called Rosamund and shes gone through several variations of her name over the years... just to suit whatever she felt like at the time. That's why I love longer names.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 02/05/2019 07:34

Drop the hyphen and bump Willow into middle name territory. She shall henceforth be named Juniper, Juno for short.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 02/05/2019 07:31

Juno is a great name!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 02/05/2019 07:27

Juniper is lovely, so is willow but the hyphen is unnecessary.
If anthing, I'd amend official name to 2 separate names without the hyphen.
Juno is gorgeous, suits a little girl but will also be good when she's grown up.

Your brother might be a dick but at 15 he's old enough to have a serious talk to about the unpleasant nickname. I assumed he was 8 when they love rude nicknames. He need to stop it NOW.

OnGoldenPond · 02/05/2019 07:20

Juno is actually not a Greek goddess but ancient Roman, the wife of Jupiter, king of the gods. The Greek (and therefore older) equivalent is Hera, wife of Zeuss, the Greek king of the gods.

Sorry to be pedantic but it is the name your DD is likely to be using for the red of her life so, when she is explaining its origin to people it is important she gets it right Smile

Lovely name, by the way. I like her official ones too.

SoupDragon · 02/05/2019 07:17

Lots of people are known only by a nickname.

Start calling your brother Dick all the time until he stops being one.

FannyFeatures · 02/05/2019 07:11

I wouldn't change her name now, out could be confusing for her as she'll be used to it.

You can drop the hyphen without doing anything official and tell the school she is known as Juno so it's unlikely they will use her name.

LynetteScavo · 02/05/2019 07:11

Juniper is lovely (I wouldn't have hyphenated) and Juno is one of my favourite names (yes, I've seen the film).

I don't see why you can't just go forward with Juno.

(I also gave my DD several "frilly" names that don't suit her- she's only ever called by her nn, even by teachers at school)

EjectorCrab · 02/05/2019 07:10

She’s 3. Her name is now Juno. You can’t change it, she can when she’s older if she wants. My DS has a name say Benjamin, he’s never been called that, ever, by anyone, he’s Ben (he’s not but you get the point).

Letthemysterybe · 02/05/2019 07:10

Well it’s her name now, you gave it to her, and like any gift you can’t just take it back!
Just carry on using Juno and just stop including the hyphen. Juno is a lovely name.

TheTreeHearsYourSecret · 02/05/2019 07:07

What does your DP think?

I have a first name on my birth certificate that my parents never called me. I wish they had changed it when I was a child.

My advice? Change it now by deed poll online, inform doctors etc then it gets changed before all the school records start. Juno is a lovely name.

And yes mine was changed at a solicitor eventually but this was a million years ago Grin before you could do it online.

ChrisPrattsFace · 02/05/2019 07:06

I have never used my full name till I met my DH, we moved away and everyone now knows me as my full name. They’re shocked that I was my nickname for 20 years.
Point being - call her what you want. When she’s a teen/college/uni/adult she’ll probably chose her own denomination of it anyways.
FWIW I think Juniper is lovely.

Rafabella8 · 02/05/2019 07:05

I too love the name Juniper or Juno. Also love Willow. Don't worry so much. The world is a much bigger place than inside your DB's idiotic head! Smile

ShutupAlexa · 02/05/2019 07:01

I love the name Juniper or Juno

Mog6840 · 02/05/2019 07:00

I think it's a beautiful name. Full and shortened!

Veterinari · 02/05/2019 07:00

I agree about dropping the hyphen. Both names are lovely in their own right.
Love Juniper and Juno is a great shortening

Bluntness100 · 02/05/2019 06:59

The issue here is the hyphen, no one was ever going to call her juniper --willow it's just too much of a mouthful.

It would be very difficult to change her name now, as that's what she will know herself as.

I'd stay with Juno. But I'd have her name changed to remove that hyphen. You could also change it about, so it's willow and then juniper as a middle name, and then when she's older she could decide to use willow instead. Or you could start to call her willow slowly.

StellaRockafella · 02/05/2019 06:58

As someone who has a hyphenated first name, I'm not a fan of them at all. It's such a mouthful. I've not answered to it or had anyone call me by it since I was in primary school. (Sometimes DP calls me it in full to wind me up). Even on official forms where both names are listed the hyphen has been omitted. This includes my passport.

Juno is a great name and as a PP has pointed out, is the name of one of the most important Roman goddesses. Am not sure how anyone can think it's suitable for a boy!

Just keep calling her Juno and when she's at school tell her teachers that's her name and the one she'll answer to. Once people know what the preferred name, they'll use it.

As an aside, a friend's daughter is called Juniper. She's always been referred to as Juni and everyone including her teachers call her this by default.

FuckeryCentral · 02/05/2019 06:56

The name is fine, trust me I've heard a lot of funny ones in my time. Your brother is just making you paranoid.

Happyandglorious · 02/05/2019 06:55

If you are happy with Juno then stick with that. You can mention on forms for school etc that that is the name she goes by.
None of her names are embarrassing but I get its quite long for everyday.
As for your brother, 15 yr olds do grow up eventually....
You can start referring to your brother as uncle ???? Something suitably embarrassing and unpleasant for your daughter to call him back. He is still a kid he's only doing it to be annoying...

mysteryfairy · 02/05/2019 06:53

Juno is a lovely name.

Drop the hyphen and her full names become less of a problem but you don't have to use them. There are many people who invariably use a shortened name.

I can see how your brother is annoying, what a stupid name. If you feel you can't get him to stop maybe you could enlist your mum to tell him how upsetting it is and to pack it in.
