Name regret... but she's 3!

We had picked out 2 names when I was pregnant with my daughter. One of them was the name we would have used if our son was a girl, so had obviously loved the name enough. I suffered some complications after birth which resulted in me not seeing my baby for 3 days. By this point, DP had announced the name to everyone - the name we had loved for our son too. He said he was sure we would have chosen that name because she looked just like this name and it suited her perfectly.

I was happy with the name. However... I've never ever called her by her full name, always a nickname derived from the full name. And the older she gets, the less I like the full name. The nickname suits her perfectly. The full name is very frilly and feminine which isnt my daughter at all.

Also my brother calls her a horrible nickname from the full name as a joke and I hate it and feel she's now going to be picked on if people know her full name.

ARGHHHH

I think Juniper Willow is completely fab! I also love Juno as a nn! Drop the hyphen between the two names and it's lovely. I don't think it's actually that frilly a name, it's more hipster than frilly feminine. Your brother is a twat also. Ignore him!

Bullies will find anything to tease children about so don't worry about that aspect.

AuntMarch · 03/05/2019 07:26

You can put "known by" names on school and nursery forms - I've looked after many children who are only ever known by a shortened nickname (except when being told off at home I expect Grin). Even back when I was at school, I didn't know some of my peers full names for years!

AnnieDianaLulu · 03/05/2019 06:55

It's her name now, she's bloody 3, better get on with it tbh Smile

girlsname · 03/05/2019 05:26

I think Juniper Willow is a lovely name but can you drop the hyphen and just let Willow become a middle name?
Also, your brothers nn is ridiculous and also has no relevance to school because Willow is a massively popular name now so I'm sure there will be plenty of other Willows around.

Korvalscat · 02/05/2019 23:53

When my dgs was due to start Nursery (Pre-school) his dm realised that he smply did not associate his full name as being his name as he had always been called by a diminutive. She had a quick word with his teacher at the taster session and the teacher said it wasn't a problem and she would use his nickname and this would be the name on his coat peg etc.
She had the same conversation with his Reception teacher and again the school was perfectly happy to use the name he preferred. Reports and other official letters are addressed in his full-name on the envelope, but that is it. Several of the other children in his class are known by shortened versions of their legal names especially when the first name is hyphenated or has a common nickname.
OP, I think Juniper -Willow is lovely but if you and she prefer Juno stick to it and other people will follow suit (except your DB who is being a dick).

Butterfly84 · 02/05/2019 22:02

Juniper is different but perfectly lovely. Your brother is obviously immature and would have given a stupid nickname to any name you chose. Juno/Juniper is very cool, don't imagne she'd ever be picked on purely for this name.

MauveTulips · 02/05/2019 21:51

& i actually really like Juniper, puts a nice twist on Juno which is a bit on-trend imo.

Jiggles101 · 02/05/2019 21:51

Lol at willy nipper 😂 your brother sounds quite funny!

Juno is nice

MauveTulips · 02/05/2019 21:50

Don’t stress, this is quite simple. Like pp’s have said, just drop the hyphen. She is Juniper, but known as Juno. My dd has a nickname we always use but I’m keeping her long name on her bc. My friend’s daughter was had a hyphen name and they’ve just quietly dropped the second part over the last few years, no one could handle such a mouthful! Think Eleanor-Verity but now always known as Ellie. It’s not a problem.

Tavannach · 02/05/2019 20:40

Agree about dropping the hyphen and just using Juno.

TatianaLarina · 02/05/2019 20:33

Juno is much better.

I’d just change it formally.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 02/05/2019 18:20

Just change her name to Juno. Juniper willow is a bit odd as a name.

starkid · 02/05/2019 17:12

I like all 3 names, but not the double-barrelled name. Changing it to Juniper then Willow as a middle name would be a good idea. Then she can still be called Juniper when older if she likes, as an option, but can shorten to Juno like you do currently

Juniper is pretty strange to be honest, so I'd stick to Juno which is much nicer

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 02/05/2019 09:36

I think hyphenated names work if then entire name is short, like Lily-Rose but Juniper-Willow is 5 syllables.

KissMeBunty · 02/05/2019 09:23

Juno is lovely. Does everyone call her that?
I see what you mean about Juniper- it's a bit Enid Blyton isn't it. But I would keep it so that she can choose when she's older.

SherlockSays · 02/05/2019 09:22

There's no need for the hyphenation. Just drop Willow to a middle name and go by Juniper & Juno. I've read multiple times that those with hyphenated names (Emily-Mae etc.) almost always drop the second name at high school anyway.

I don't think Juniper is frilly / feminine at all either. It's a lovely, strong name.

BlueMerchant · 02/05/2019 09:19

I would keep the Juniper, drop hyphen and have Willow as a middle name. It's too much altogether.
Juno is what she'd be called by everyone on a daily basis.

PerfectPeony2 · 02/05/2019 09:16

Actually sleepingstandingup that’s true and the better way to go! Tell him he’s creepy and inappropriate because she’s a 3 year old ffs!

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 02/05/2019 09:15

Juniper is nice
Willow is nice
Juno is fabulous
Juniper-Willow is just too much of mouthful.

I’d bite the bullet and change it officially to Juno. It might be some annoying admin, but she’s 3- you probably only need to provide the deed poll to the doctor, child benefit office and maybe change a passport? Much easier than when she’s school age.

PerfectPeony2 · 02/05/2019 09:15

I love her full name (probably wouldn’t have used a hyphen- just first name and middle name) but it’s lovely and there’s lots of variations she could used if she grows up and wants to change it.

And yes your brother is an idiot, tell him to piss off. If he keeps doing it create an equally bad nickname for him and start using that instead of his real name!

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/05/2019 09:14

Just don’t declare the ‘Willow’ part and put her down on all school forms as Juniper known as Juno. Beautiful name OP.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 02/05/2019 09:14

Juno is great but your DD might like to use Juniper later on in life.

Don't let your brother put you off her name!

I'd shame your brother and tell him it's inappropriate to give his niece a name with sexual connotations
^^ what SleepingStandingUp said, it's creepy.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/05/2019 09:02

I think her nickname Juno and her full name are lovely and unusual.
Look at Prince Harry. He is always called Harry but his real name us Henry.

Maybe just drop the hyphen and use Juniper as a formal first name and Willow as a middle name.
