Margaret - what do you think?

This is a name with great significance in my family so I would love to honour my DGrandmother by using it -
But what connotations does this name give to you? Is it too old fashioned? Or a beautiful classic?

Because Daisy is the English name for the flower that is Marguerite in French.

Thank you for your replies. I'm pleasantly surprised by how positive reactions have been although it does seem to be a name of extreme reactions - love it or hate it.

Not keen on Margaret but I do like Maggie. I know a lovely Maggie so for me, even from the mining heartlands of the North East, it has broken away from Margaret Thatcher.

I hate it.

It's my first name but have always used my second name. I was named after my grandma but even my parents never called me Margaret and used my second name.

That said I quite like Maggie or Meg.

I love Margaret! I love Maggie and Peggy as nicknames with Margaret on the birth certificate, and I love Margot as an alternative or a nickname.

I do have slight Thatcher connotations though which would probably hold me back from naming my own daughter that. But if I heard someone else had a new baby named Margaret, my reaction would be “I’m so jealous!”.

Love it. Especially Maggie (then I know two lovely Maggie's, so Thatcher doesn't matter to me).

Long overdue a revival. I blame Thatcher for that. Plenty of famous Margarets other than Thatcher, though - Smith, Atwood, Drabble, Forster, Mitchell (Gone with the Wind), Gyllenhaal, Hambling, Mead, Ashcroft, Court, the list goes on.

It's not my favourite name but it's a classic, easy to spell, easy to pronounce. Means pearl.

I like it, and all the nickname options - Meg, Maggie, Mags, Daisy. It's a very dignified sounding name.

It's my Mum's name. She's in her 70's. She's always hated it. To the point of anger. And, she's the most mellow, laid back person. Except about her name.

So, to me it has negative connotations. It's made my Mum sad.

I love it. I also really like Marguerite, a very pretty version, and if you are thinking of a nn, Daisy is lovely.

My DGM is named that so I only have pleasant thoughts on the name - though do agree Margot is a nice halfway point on it. Marguerite is also lovely though will probably get questions on its forrin spelling.

Margaret also has the nickname Daisy Smile, amongst many others posted previously, which makes it so flexible for a little girl and, later, a woman.

I like that it's a proper name, lots of scope for nicknames - Maggie, Peggie, Margo.

Its quite a stern strong old fashioned name. I prefer the softer Margarita, and I quite like Maggie
