My partner and I were coming round to the idea of Maximus but thought a little too strong for our taste.

Anybody have any thoughts on Maxen or Macsen please?

Maxence is quite common here in France

sawdustformypony · 10/05/2019 18:49

Is it more of a North Walian name ? I don't see it used in South Wales. The only one I know has parents from North Wales.

MikeUniformMike · 09/05/2019 10:26

Yes but English people will say it to rhyme with Jaxon, when it doesn't.
Lots of welsh names have been ruined for me by becoming popular outside Wales.
For example, Dylan, Rhiannon, Rhian, Angharad, Bethan, Siân, Osian, Eira.
Great in a native tongue but not in their anglicised pronunciation.
Similarly, English or non-Welsh names can sound unattractive in a broad Welsh accent.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 09/05/2019 10:14

Or just honest mistakes? No-one knows all the names from everywhere.

Of course not but there's no need for people to sneer or say it's made up. If they haven't heard of it, it can't exist?

Macsen is great and easy to pronounce, even for English people Grin.

MikeUniformMike · 09/05/2019 10:08

I really like Maxim.

WalterIris · 09/05/2019 09:19

Maxian is another option

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2019 15:03

The en bit rhymes with pen. It doesn't rhyme with Jackson.

ItsAllGone19 · 26/04/2019 22:35

I love the name Macsen. I've only met one so it's not a common name even in Welsh speaking circles.

If you like Max though just go for that. There doesn't have to be a longer name to accompany it. Otherwise Maxwell is a softer option for a longer "Max" name. I'd personally avoid the Maxen spelling.

MonaChopsis · 26/04/2019 22:21

I like Macsen and know a few (live in Wales). All are called Macs/Max for short, rather than Mac. As MikeUniformMike said, it's pronounced Max-en, so shortening to Mac would sound very weird.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 26/04/2019 22:12

How about Mack?

naughtynorm · 26/04/2019 18:13

Just because a name isn't English doesn't mean it's made up Hmm. Be prepared for him being regularly call Mason instead if you're not in Wales.

MikeUniformMike · 26/04/2019 18:10

I'm not missing your point at all.

Lottie35 · 26/04/2019 17:48

MikeUniformMike you missed the point I was making Hmm

Happyhusband · 25/04/2019 20:27

@lettuce i will wind in my outraged neck a little. Lol.

stellarfox · 25/04/2019 19:09

I think the pronunciation is pretty clear so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work outside of Wales. It’s refreshing compared to other Max names!

LettuceLeave · 25/04/2019 18:59

Despise**

LettuceLeave · 25/04/2019 18:59

@Happyhusband actually, the mumsnet jury despite the Kayden Jayden names 😋

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2019 18:06

I think if you're not Welsh/in Wales, Macsen does look a bit like you meant McSen or something.

Why not just call the kid Max?

MikeUniformMike · 25/04/2019 17:07

Lottie35, read the comments about the name Macsen on this thread. That's why the names don't work.
Call your son Dafydd if you like but don't complain when his name is mispronounced or misspelt. Which it will be.
People can be very rude about names and will actually say things like "I'm not even going to try saying that" (and worse) to your face.
FWIW, Macsen is pronounced Max-en, with the emphasis on the Max.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/04/2019 16:14

Jeez you English can be so judgemental of it isn't Kaedyn or Poppi or whatever.

Pretty judgmental about Kaedyn and Poppi as well actually Grin

wertuio · 25/04/2019 16:11

Pretty sure that Maxim was or is the title of a ahem Gentleman’s Magazine.
Maybe call him Razzle or H & E?

Lottie35 · 25/04/2019 15:51

Getting really annoyed with comments about names not working outside Wales! How ignorant!

Why can't it work outside Wales? Are people that lazy they can't make the effort to learn a name that is not anglicised?!

So lets get rid of all cultural identity for fear of upset some English people.

I now live in England if I have a son I'd love to call him Dafydd..... The amount of critism because it's "not English"
I've never encountered such rubbish!

MikeUniformMike · 25/04/2019 12:55

I don't think Macsen works outside the Welsh community. I think it will get said as Mackson, and it seems a bit Jaxon-y.

PodgeBod · 25/04/2019 11:04

I've never heard of Macsen and I actually thought it was a creative spelling for Mason. I'm not really keen on it.

EvilDog · 25/04/2019 10:08

We have Macsen on our list for if baby is a boy. A lot nicer than Maximilian or Maxwell but still the same potential nicknames.
We’re Welsh but I don’t think it should stop you using it if you have no welsh connection!
