Buzz

Tbh I think celebrity names are ok for minted celebrities because their kids don’t need to worry about being taken seriously at job interviews etc. If you’re a millionaire then I’m sure Buzz or Adam or Tristan or Eyore will all do fine in life - but if you’re not I think it’s risking making your child’s life harder than it needs to be so you can feel unique.

Or how about Balonz?

I looked up names with B & Z in them & found Bernez which is apparently a variant of Bernard - I’ve never heard of it but even that would be easier to pull off than being named just Buzz & naturally nicknames to Buzz?

It's a nickname that irrationally raises my heckles, so I don't like it as a name, personally, and I usually like fairly 'out-there' names.

I think it's because it's a word/sound that I associate with being annoying.
As a word, 'buzz' doesn't have hugely pleasant connotations.

It's also a big name to live up to, isn't it? I mean, to pull it off I think you'd have to be a pretty big character, particularly as a young adult starting out. I can imagine it being rather a burden to a shy, quiet type of chap.

Plus it does feel like a celebrity copy-cat type of name.

If you really want to do it, could you use it as a nickname to give him the ability to change it if he wants to when older? Benjamin Zack = Buzz something like that?

It would be a rough name in some situations. I know you can grow your own gravitas, but you’d have to cultivate a lot to counteract Buzz at a job interview.

Frank Skinner’s son is called Buzz. He’s maybe 6 years old now and is the only Buzz I’ve heard of as a Christian name, rather than as a nickname.

I think the "not a grown up name" argument isnt a reason not too, as there is a greater variety of names to choose from now so of his generation Buzz might be quite normal to his peers. I know a 50 year old female Merlin! Also when my cousin named her son Phoenix 20 years ago there were a lot of raised eyebrows, he is the nicest young man and now nobody bats and eyeball.
If you can imagine yourself saying it out loud when he is throwing a tantrum in tesco without embarrasment than I say go for it !

I know a 3-year-old Buzz (full first name) and I have always thought it was ridiculous. He is a sweet little boy but I feel bad for him not having anything with a bit more gravitas to fall back on.

No I wouldn't. Giovanna and Tom Fletcher can get away with it because they are famous and probably mix in circles with all kinds of weirdo names. But for a normal person in society a name like Buzz could be a recipe for disaster.

It strikes me as way too self-consciously cool/different, and more than a little bit celebrity wannabe (Tom and Giovanna Fletcher from McFly and something have one).

It’s not a name I’d want for myself, nor is it a particularly versatile one in my opinion. I can’t see it suiting anything other than a popular, sporty, energetic, extroverted 6-12 year old. That’s a pretty small time and personality window!

This, to me, is one of those names picked for the parents and not for the child.

It doesn't sound like a name to me. I think you should ask yourself, "is this a name I see myself loving in 10 years?" if the answer is no, then the name is just a hormonal fancy! But, as a PP said, it is unique and 'cool' and if you're sure you love it...then nothing's holding you back

Awful, sorry. Buzz can be a nickname but as a name in itself? I just can’t imagine being a grown man called Buzz.

I knew a lovely Labrador called Buzz. His brother was called Woody. Perfect names for dogs, not so much for people.

It sounds American. I don't dislike it per se, I just don't think it works in the UK with any British accent

I used to live in the States. Even there, Buzz is usually either a nickname or a shortening of Busby - which sounds less weird over there, because of the tradition of using surnames as first names, e.g. Bailey. I never met a Buzz who had that on his birth certificate.

If you love the name, OP, use it as a nickname. Give your DS a name that won't put him at risk of being laughed at his whole life, and of having the shit kicked out of him in the playground.
