Jasper for a boy- thoughts?

Thinking of boys names and favourite at the moment is Jasper but have heard that it sounds a bit posh! What do you think? Other names we like are Sebastian, Lucas/Luca and Theo. Looking for a nice but not common name... I remember when I was at school there were so many Olivers and Emmas and Sophies... we had to put the first letter of their surname after it to differentiate hehe. Let me know what you think xxx

My boss was called Jasper in the UK and he was everything but posh. News to me it's posh. I like it, and I like Luca. All the names are fine.

Ludicrous.

Apart from anything else, Jasper is a really old name, and one famous Jasper - Carrot - was from Brum.

No, posh isn’t ‘bad’, it’s just an association in the UK that might feed into your perceptions of a name and the person it belongs to. So a boy named Mohammed will he assumed to be Muslim, a boy named Pierre will be assumed to be French, and if you have a Jasper people might assume that you’re either posh or trying very hard to be seen as such. The latter is something many people want to avoid, so they’re not seen as pretentious.

Having said that, a posh name could have many benefits.

FWIW I like Jasper a lot and it seems to be picking up some momentum these days. I think the ‘posh’ associations will start to fade.

To me they're just classy and beautiful! Is 'posh' bad?!

I'm not in the UK so it always sounds odd to me when people on this site worry about a name being 'posh' - do you realise that wouldn't enter the head of anyone outside the UK? I'd just use what you like and not worry about that.... And I do love Jasper. Love pp suggestion of Rufus, and Sebastian is good too.

Nothing wrong with a supposedly posh name if you identify with that. I love Jasper Hugo Seb etc. My son is a Miles which I love but wish I'd had a Rupert. (Roo). Fab name.

I have a 1 year old Jasper and obviously love the name. We’ve met a couple of others under 5 but it’s not super popular yet.

My daughter would have been Jasper if she had been a boy.
Didn’t go for it with DS as didn’t seem to suit with DD name but I still love it. I think it’s a little bit quirky without being weird.

Jasper... yes yes Yes YES!!!!! I just love this name. i have two girls not biased at all, i just honestly think it is a perfect name. classic without being boring, slightly spunky and timeless. if you love it go for it! x

haha, I had heard the pet name thing too. A friend of mine is called Molly and she said growing up everyone's dog was called Molly but still think it's pretty xxx

My son's best friend is called Jasper, he's not especially posh, but a real little character. Another friend has just had a baby and called him Jasper, and I know of one 40+.
Ds's friend gets called 'jazzy' . I think it's going to be relatively popular in the future.

I had a cat called Jasper.
I know two boys with this name, one is a bit 'posh' the other isn't.
It's a nice name, not overly popular. It could get shortened to 'Jas'

I like jasper. If I had had my own way ds2 would be Jasper. He’s 17 now and I still wish I’d called him jasper.
