Betsy much cooler than Ellie which is a bit dated now.

1forAll74 · 23/06/2019 02:21

Four of my late Mums neighbours were named Betsy, and that was in the 1940 war era ha ha.. Best go for Doris, as that was my late Mums name. ha ha, There was also an Ellie in our street in the 1940 era,but her proper name was Ellen.

I had a friend, who wanted to name her daughter Tania, but she spent ages trying to decide if it should be Tania, Tanya,or even Tanniya. omg, such problems ha ha.

Gummybear11 · 22/06/2019 19:37

Sorry personally I really don't like the name Betsy unless for an elderly lady with a perm iyswim...
I like Ellie more.

Perditavita · 21/06/2019 18:36

I think Betsy is too cute. It works for a child or an old lady but not really the long bit in between. I’d always assume a Betsy was an Elizabeth and personally I prefer longer names on the birth certificate even if the long name was never used.
Ironically, both names you like could be nicknames of Elizabeth yet you don’t like it!
Ellie is dull as paint so on that basis, I’d have to say Betsy is better.

showmethegin · 21/06/2019 17:32

Betsy! Although I am biased because my niece is Betsy and she is the most brilliant little girl in the world!

Jemimapuddleduckpancake · 21/06/2019 17:08

LOVE Betsy! Not Elizabeth. Betsy is sooo cute. Elizabeth is so boring.

DickZillaofTheVilla · 21/06/2019 01:43

Betsy

Abouttoblow · 21/06/2019 01:15

The Times announcing the new Chairperson of the Bank of England....Betsy.

Nope.

CaitlinEJ · 20/06/2019 21:33

If you love Ellie but worry about it being too popular what about Eliana or Elisa.

NoFucksImAQueen · 20/06/2019 19:33

the funny thing is you're so against Elizabeth but both the names you like are shortenings of it. theres also a host of other nicknames like lizzie, Beth, effie that she could use from it. as someone who had a name which cant be shortened or changed and was unusual, I wish my parents had given me one with nickname choices.

Owlbert · 20/06/2019 13:15

Betsy

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 20/06/2019 11:46

There's also Bettina as a possibility

theydontknowweknow · 20/06/2019 10:40

Betsy is going to be our little girl's middle name when she's born, I love it, go with that!

AverageMummy · 20/06/2019 10:36

I think Betsy as a full name is used a lot by the traveller community? Wouldn’t stop me using it but just sprang to mind.

AverageMummy · 20/06/2019 10:32

Betsy just doesn’t sound like a name to me - I have worked places where I’ve seen CVs binned over being deemed to have silly names / not made an effort. So I wouldn’t be able to bring myself to do it but at the same time it’s the fashion with babies now so hopefully by the time they’re adults no one would think anything of it. So I wouldn’t but of your two I’d go Betsy.
There was a poster in here who called her daughter something short - I’m sure it was something like Beth or Betsy - only for the daughter to decide to use the traditional full version as her nickname.

SnowdropFox · 20/06/2019 06:19

Not a fan of Betsy (or Elizabeth ha!) So I'd go with Ellie, it's been popular for a while so parents are possibly avoiding it more now?

QuickRedFox · 20/06/2019 06:18

I know a solicitor called Betsy and her name doesn’t seem to hold her back.
I agree with OP about putting the name you want to us on the BC. I have a Tess and everyone thinks I should have put Teresa, but it’s just not the same.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 20/06/2019 06:11

Definately Betsy. Ellie is done to absolute death.

Betsy is the better of the two. Cute and then quirky and sexy when she gets older. Don't think it will negatively affect her image as regards recruitment when older, at all. More likely stand out and increase her chancesSmile

AmyMaria2 · 20/06/2019 03:04

Betsy is better
However a very gypsy traveller name.

Astronica · 20/06/2019 01:24

I prefer Betsy - it has more personality than Ellie. Ellie is safer though in that it doesn't divide people as much.

BummyKnocker · 20/06/2019 00:52

I don't know anyone called Ellie!

mummymonica · 20/06/2019 00:49

Really love the name Betsy💕💜

Tavannach · 14/04/2019 04:20

Ella

Mabellavender · 14/04/2019 00:14

The people doing the hiring and firing when our babies are older will all be called cute nick name type of names anyway so I doubt they will care.

I know a few Betsys and none have Elizabeth on bc.

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 14/04/2019 00:09

I think of people sifting through CVs and coming across what looks like a shortened name and just thinking, "What? Nah! Next..."
I think honestly you are narrowing options for your dd later on down the line if she wants to make certain career choices
