Two siblings with the same initial?

Just asking you guys to humour me here as I'm only four weeks pregnant so obvs no idea what we are having! We already have a daughter with a name beginning with M, DH and I were discussing potential girl names today and we both really like one that also begins with M. Is it weird to have two siblings with the same initial? It's Margaret/Maggie we are thinking of. Current daughter has similar 'old lady' name which we shorten in a similar way.

Thanks all! Lots of food for thought! At the moment we're leaning towards Agnes/Aggie

I have 2 R names 2 J, 2 C, 2 T,!! Not intentional!!

SallyWD · 08/04/2019 12:25

My husband, his 4 siblings and his mum all name names beginning with the same letter. No problem at all.

GillianUsedToLiveHere · 08/04/2019 11:43

I deliberately gave my children different initials because my sister, myself and my Dad all have the same initial. Post was always incorrectly opened, my Dad (half blind without his glasses) did it on a regular basis.

My friend has named her daughters with the same first letter so their wellies lined up by the door both have LA in, which is funny because they are so close in shoe size how the hell are you meant to know which child's boots are which?

Another friend has rhyming names, how on earth you know which name she when she is calling one of them from another room (think Pam and Dan but not those names) or when she is telling one of them to stop fighting with the other one who is she assigning blame to?

Just choose another name. There are thousands out there.

Having said that though it may not matter nowdays because mail is hardly ever used. The hospital did mix me up with my sister in law though as we were both RW and seeing people in the same department

RuthW · 08/04/2019 11:35

Don't do it. I have same initial as my dad and that caused enough problems.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 08/04/2019 08:13

I share initials with both my siblings and made sure not to do so with my kids and lean towards disliking it, but I suspect if we had a better relationship then I wouldn't have thought about it. It was never really an issue either with paperwork or anything like that.

Lokidokiartichoki · 08/04/2019 08:01

I think you’re overthinking it. No one irl will probably even notice. And the post issue will become obsolete as most companies use online mail now so I doubt people will even get letters by the time it would apparently become a huge deal.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 08/04/2019 07:51

My brother and all three same intinals

Hes george lawerence smith
I'm Gemma, lousia smith (not our real names)

No one really cared apart from the odd renark about oh its saves money on name labels but mum herself joked about that as she used to just get labels with G L Smith and sew them in to both sets of uniforms etc

villagesecret · 08/04/2019 07:45

If it's ok for Pauline Fowler 😂

Eustasiavye · 08/04/2019 07:44

Never really have it much thought.
Actually my H to be and I have the same name just the make and female version!

Essexgirlupnorth · 08/04/2019 07:02

As long as they have different initials it is ok. My friends brother had same initials and surname as his father and had trouble getting credit when his dad was made bankrupt.

Calixtine · 08/04/2019 06:48

Two is fine; it’s only 3+ when it becomes a pattern (unless the parents have the same initial, too).

Margaret is a lovely name btw. Congratulations!

Tavannach · 08/04/2019 03:32

Why not? Just don't have 3 with the same initial.
I like Margot as a NN for Margaret btw.

MercyBodle · 08/04/2019 03:28

Not an issue at all. It starts to become odd in my mind when there are 3 starting with the same letter.

llangennith · 07/04/2019 23:43

As it's such early days yet try to avoid names with the same initial.

MumUnderTheMoon · 07/04/2019 23:42

If the names are at all similar sounding either in proper form or as nn I'd steer clear. It's a bit tacky.

mozzarellasticks · 07/04/2019 23:41

I've found it really annoying having the same initial as my brother - we've opened each other's post loads of times!

FrangipaniBlue · 07/04/2019 23:11

DH and DSIL names start with same letter.

DBIL1 & DBIL2 names also start with the same letter (but not the same one as DH and DSIL).

All four of their names end in the same phonetic sound (so they kind of rhyme).

MIL swears blind it wasn't intentional and just coincidence that those were the names she liked at the time.

Rainatnight · 07/04/2019 23:06

We have two with the same initial. They're both still really little and some people say 'oh that's cute', but I don't think it will be an issue when they're older, and definitely isn't why we did it. DD's name was the only girl's name we both liked, and DS's was a family name we were always going to use.

pamplemoussed · 07/04/2019 23:00

I think it’s hardly noticeable with two children ( unless they ‘go’ together like Jack and Jill ) I’d only really notice if there were 3 or more children and even then I’d think it was their business not mine.

Aimily · 07/04/2019 22:52

Not strange at all. If you like the name and if it does come out a girl, go for it.

If it helps at all ny dad's parents had 11 children all the girls (bar the elder 2),start C, the boys (bar the youngest) M. I think you run out of names when you have that many? Plus being Catholic they're all named after Saints.
And as it happens, one of my aunts has named all 4 of her children with R.

ChidiAnnaKendrick · 07/04/2019 22:48

My youngest two (of four) share an initial. They both use shortenings that change that letter to different ones though (think Alexander and Amelia changing to Xander and Millie, but not). It’s never bothered them, they haven’t even noticed, it’s never caused an issue with mail as they are a boy and a girl.

If you like the name, go for it. If you have a third don’t feel you need to do it again though, then it becomes knobby Grin

Flossy04 · 07/04/2019 22:39

The kardashians? 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

nocluenoidea · 07/04/2019 22:39

I think it's absolutely fine! I keep thinking of school friends who had the same initials as each other and I hadn't even realised at the time anyway
