If we love this, what else might we like

DH & I both adore the name Brody for our little boy due very soon. Everyone we've spoken to says it's not a bad name, it's just very Hollywood. I'm trying to think if we both love this name, what other names we may like?

I hate the name but it wouldn’t matter what you liked someone would hate it - my daughter has a name that a few didn’t like & it did rock my confidence a little but she’s 4 & it’s a beautiful name that she & I both love & I’m glad I had the guts to go with it

It was indeed, but that doesn't make Kelly any less Irish. If things being written and spoken in the Irish language is a requirement for authenticity that rules out the vast majority of Irish people!

Names can still be Irish even if they're not spelt in Irish.

Kelly is one of the most common Irish surnames there is. Has a K and a Y.

Brody is American but not commonly used (I'm American and Canadian). My friend has a DS here named Brodie (she's of Scottish descent) but he's nearly five and we've never met another yet.

I'd say go with Brodie. It's not too American. You love it.

@Xando I don't think you need to worry. Children have such a wide variety of names these days, Brody will not be considered outlandish in any classroom in the 2020s.

I don't think your child would be mocked for being called Brody. Kids these days are used to a much wider variety of names than in the past and Brody is pretty normal as names go, anyway.

As for whether he would be unhappy with it or not, well you run the risk of him disliking whatever name you decide on. You could call him something very standard and he might dislike it for being too popular. Ultimately though, most people don't agonise much about their own names and whatever name you give him, he will get used to it and probably not spend much time thinking about it either way.

Golden rule Numero Uno: Never tell people what you're planning to name your child until your child is born! No name is universally loved. So the person who dislikes Brody might think Henry is a great name and then the next person will dislike Henry and think you should call him Joshua...and on and on.

Adolf is a definite no. And if his first name/surname combo is the same name as a famous (or infamous) person, that's also a no. Everything else however is just personal taste.

@YesimstillwatchingNetflix Yes I know. DH has that same opinion. My concern is I don't want to give a name that will be mocked or the child will be unhappy with and some opinions on this name are rather strong. I guess I'm overthinking it!

Thanks for all the replies. We prefer the Brody spelling but that seems to be very popular in America whereas Brodie is popular in Scotland. We were pairing it with a very English middle name and love the way it sounds but all the overly American comments have put me off as we have no American connections. All the other names I like are very popular at the moment and this name seems like the only one we have which will be unique. It's so hard to not care what other people think!

God, who cares what other people think! Call him Brody if you both love Brody. Hang other people's opinions.
