Hi quick post. Me and dh have chosen the name colton for our ds due in september but none of our family likes it.

Thoughts on it would be welcome?

Really do not want to change as it is the only name we agree on and we have ordered cot bedding etc with name on.

Tia x

I read it as Cotton.

I’ll get my coat.

sandi2019 · 03/04/2019 18:28

Ps....I also dont like it tbh.....you might think its quirky....but he's the one that has to carry it for life....

sandi2019 · 03/04/2019 18:25

I feel like I need to correct it to Carlton. I've heard Kalton as well...which I really like...but.....not sure about Colton........I just feel he may go through lots of:
"Colton".
"Carlton?"
"No...Colton. C.O.L.T.O.N"
"Oh.....Colton???? That's....unusual!"

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 03/04/2019 18:17

It's the first name of an actor on Coronation st i think,dh wanted us to call ds it

Shelbybear · 03/04/2019 18:14

It's unusual but not horrible or weird imo. It will grow on people I'm sure. Don't let anyone put u off if u really love it, take it as a lesson learned. Don't tell anyone the name.

I told my mum a few names that were on the list and she was like oh no don't call her that, so I learned my lesson. Once we had 1 boys and 1 girls name. We told no one. Mum was well annoyed but if she hasn't give her opinion so strongly I would have shared my choice.

Put it this way, when you announce the birth and tell family and friends the name they won't go congratulations but the name is horrible. They might think it but they won't say it!

ABitOTT · 03/04/2019 06:49

Doesn't matter what your family think as it is your child! My parents in law didn't like my DS name the name became irrelevant after they met him for the first time.

Disneymum1993 · 02/04/2019 19:15

Thanks everyone just wanted a general consensus. I loved reuben and theodore but there is already 3 of each in dds nursery class. Minds made up family will need to get used to it. Iv seen some horrific names on here but everyone has there own taste.

I don't like it at all, but it's up to you, it's your baby. Don't listen to what anyone else says, go with what you like.

feelingsinister · 01/04/2019 22:45

I don't like it but clearly you do so stick with it. It's no-one else's business so ignore your family.

Trinnidad · 01/04/2019 22:41

I'm Scottish - it looks like Calton Hill in Edinburgh has been misspelled. Not a fan but you clearly love it!

NunoGoncalves · 01/04/2019 21:19

I don't havelove it but I don't dislike it either. I do know that I don't personally care about what my family thinks of my children's names and I don't think you should either! A name is just a name at the end of the day! It's your personal decision not theirs.

TheCraicDealer · 01/04/2019 19:34

I know a little Colton of about 4 or 5. It's not to my taste but equally it's unusual without being unpronounceable or really "out there". The little boy I know suits it now, but he had to grow into it if you know what I mean- it ends in a hard "-tun" sound and there's no cute nicknames for it. Does it go with your DD's names? No, but it doesn't really have to- he's a person in his own right and not part of a set.

We have two names shortlisted for DD (first time I've used that!) also due in September and my parents were lukewarm to say the least. But they'll get used to whatever we pick, like we all did with my DNeice's name which no-one was keen on initially!

Divgirl2 · 01/04/2019 19:31

Hate it. I'm Scottish, the only way I can imagine it is being screamed out the back door of a council house.

Why ask for opinions when you've already ordered personalised baby stuff?

gauntletthrown · 01/04/2019 19:21

I know a 6yo Colton.

I never liked the name when they told us and I still don't. It's too American.

That said, your kid, call him what you like

Strokethefurrywall · 01/04/2019 18:21

Love it and a breath of fresh air amongst the influx of Hugo/Freddie/Archie/Alfie/Jack/Oliver names

Family name on my mum's side is Carlton and I wanted it for DS1 (cousin's first name is Carlton, granpa's name is Carl, female cousin is Carla, you get the picture...)

DH is Scottish though, so when pronounced it, it came out Carolton. So we ended up calling DS1 Carter Smile

Your other names are lovely, ignore your family and go with your gut!

GreatDuckCookery · 01/04/2019 18:15

Never heard of it. Sorry not keen, sounds like a surname.

Bunnybigears · 01/04/2019 17:48

I would prefer Carlton but it's your baby.

NewSchoolNewName · 01/04/2019 17:46

That’s the trouble with telling people the name before baby’s born, there’s a chance they think you’re asking for their approval.

If you and your DH both love the name then ignore your family’s opinion. They’ll get used to it once your baby is born.
Or alternatively, tell them you’ve had a think about their (rude) remarks and you’ve decided to change the name. Baby will now be called Hallowe’en (or something equally ridiculous). They’ll be delighted when baby’s born and you’ve changed your mind back to Colton Wink

AssassinatedBeauty · 01/04/2019 17:41

It "goes" as well as anything else with Orlaith and Seren. You've got an Irish and a Welsh name so far, and Colton is either English or Irish in origin from what I can see online. Seems fair enough!

Hanab · 01/04/2019 17:34

Your baby your choice!

Don’t understand why family has to have a say .. talking from experience btw ..

Colton is lovely 🌷

Disneymum1993 · 01/04/2019 17:33

Also family dont like it as it doesnt go with dds names orlaith and seren. We are in scotland so think most people will be able to pronounce correctly.

Disneymum1993 · 01/04/2019 17:31

Haha thanks for all the opinions as this is my 3rd i like to be organised picked both dd names at 16 weeks and both gender scans were correct. Not going to change it just wanted opinions.

Some people are cheeky fxckers on here haha

Newyearsameoldshit · 01/04/2019 14:41

If you like it and want to stick with it, then go for it!

If there are any subsequent babies, don't tell family the name before they arrive - people are much less likely to be negative about a name when it belongs to an actual lovely little baby.

Lllot5 · 01/04/2019 14:33

Well wouldn’t be my choice but I dare say you wouldn’t like my kids names. If you like it stick with it especially now you ordered things with it on.

adulthumanwolf · 01/04/2019 14:31

Do you want to know if people on MN like it?

Or if in general you should ignore family being critical?
