Romilly, Juno or Elke?

I've narrowed it down to these three and love them all. Which do you like best?

Elke is hipster in the UK and 'late middle-aged lady with dyed red hair and a rucksack with little mirrors on' in Germany.

This. Not great and unlikely to make a comeback in Germany or the Netherlands ever any time soon.

I know an Elke but she spells it Elka to avoid all the mispronounced starts

In Dutch and German, closest to what in English would be spelled Elka. Or, like the last sound in 'ever' in a non-rhotic English accent.

Just so you know, most British people will pronounce Elke as either 'Elky', 'Elkay' or 'Elk'. The schwa sound at the end doesn't seem to be an option to them.

How is it supposed to be pronounced?

I’m not keen on Romilly.

Juno is quite cool. Not yet popular in my neck of the woods :)

Cultured? Gosh, I never thought it was uncultured to mispronounce a foreign name, before someone has told you what it should be! It's not an insult, just a fact about different phonological systems and spellings. Just something to be aware of I think, as you can't expect every random person calling your name in a waiting room to get it right because they happen to have encountered the name before. I know many Dutch people with more unfortunate examples of this, like Freek, Geke and Joke. Grin

Not ‘the whole of Britain’, though, because there are some people in this country who are cultured or know an Elke or have connections to the origins.

(like Elkie brooks the singer) (london if that helps with accent)

knew a really nice Romilly but her mum did say it was often misspelt and they had Rommel comments ....wouldnt have crossed my mind til she said it but then couldn't unhear..

Juno - the film or junoesque but also a Nasa spaceship- but it seems to be quite popular here if that makes a difference- often younger sib of Noah.. ......any others to consider????

Oh and I agree Elka would be an option to avoid this if it matters to you! I find that a lot of people spell my name with -a when they have only heard it, so that seems natural.

@Sessy I do know I'm afraid, because my name has the same type of ending. Sorry, should have made that clear but I hesitated to 'out' myself. I get these three variants (most frequently the -ee), practically never the schwa pronunciation. It bothers me a bit because I think they sound quite silly, but of course other people may not care!

Elke is by far my favourite, but living in the UK I might spell it Elka (which is an established variant) to avoid the pronunciation problems.

Romilly is pretty and classic with a bohemian whiff and I think it is lovely.
Juno is fun easy to spell and pronounce and to me doesn't label your DD in any way but isn't my personal preference.
I am not sure whether Elke is Elkee ( actress) or Elkuh ( more European) , either way it is growing on me and I quite like it.

I have a Romilly. We get lots of compliments, though most people have not come across it and can be a little flummoxed. It is a lot of name, for sure... I once read on here that someone thought it sounded like an army general Grinsometimes I do think we should have gone with something a bit more mainstream! But I still love it.

I like Juno too! Not sure about Elke.
