Negative comments make me regret daughter’s name.

I know people are going to say not to worry but it’s something that I think about regularly. My daughter is three and her name is Evelyn. She has never, ever been called Evie (not even once) and her name was picked for sentimental reasons. When we named her I had never been on a site like this and having never met another little Evelyn I didn’t know it was popular (still haven’t met another one in our area!) however I get really sad that it is pretty much always called boring or horrible on this site. I very rarely see anything positive about it and it makes me regret not calling her Eliza. I’m not sure how to learn to love my daughter’s name again (maybe just come off this site? But I love looking at it for inspiration for baby number two) anyone been/felt similar about their child’s name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
sagradafamiliar · 21/03/2019 14:14

I've never seen anyone post negatively about the name. It's not in the slightest bit controversial, or 'chavvy', or forrin sounding.

Milicentbystander72 · 21/03/2019 14:10

OP, Evelyn is so beautiful. Please don't change it.

On MN, my name and both my children's names are consistently called boring and unimaginative. I don't care. I know the reasons they were named and still love them.

Ignore Thanks

RedBerryTea · 21/03/2019 14:04

Evelyn is a fine name. I have a daughter called Bobbie - not the name she was given at birth but a pet name that stuck and nobody calls her by her 'proper' name anymore. I love it, she loves it, everybody remembers it and it just really suits her. Having grown up reading P.G.Woodhouse and watching films like "The Railway Children", the name for me evokes a smart, capable girl who stands no nonsense (a bit head-girlish I suppose), but I saw a thread on here that mentioned the name and most people disliked it, some said it was chavvie etc. Fair enough. The world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things.

thewinkingprawn · 21/03/2019 13:51

Come off the site - you can’t deal with people you don’t know having a different opinion so I would come off.

chrismartinsfuturewife · 21/03/2019 13:49

It's a beautiful name

3timeslucky · 21/03/2019 13:46

I think it is lovely.

If it makes you feel any better I chose ds1's name with nooooo thought to how popular or not it might be. He ended up as one of three in school. Doesn't make it any less nice a name. And most importantly it is his name.

This is not the real world. Most people irl don't give a moment's thought to other people's names. Really. The bubbles you find on the internet are just that.

BuildAParsnip · 21/03/2019 13:46

It's a really beautiful name.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 21/03/2019 13:45

It's a gorgeous name. My DS has a little friend called Evelyn at nursery (he calls her Evvy).

Jenasaurus · 21/03/2019 13:41

My friend named his DD Sybil, the name was ridiculed by some at the time and compared to the character in Faulty Towers, but she was a beautiful child, (inside and out) and is now a beautiful woman in her twentys, after the initial reaction to a name that's not typically fashionable the name becomes linked to the child and now I think of beautiful, happy, confident people when I think of that name. So a name, any name with a negative connotation can be turned around. Think of Maud Adams (Bond Girl). Evelynn is lovely

blueshoes · 21/03/2019 13:38

I’ve never to this day met anyone as morally strong and kind as her so to me the name means something special

That's an Evelyn- core of steel, heart of gold

Yes, Evelyns have your back when the chips are down. You'd want them in your corner.

Ploppymoodypants · 21/03/2019 13:35

If it’s any consolation we get loads of negative comments about both our DD names. But DH and I love them, they suit our daughters and we don’t give it a second thought.

lmusic87 · 21/03/2019 13:32

It's a very popular name at the moment, i must know about 10 Evies.

dragoning · 21/03/2019 13:32

It's a very pretty name IMO. I know three young Evelyns around the age of ten, all very lovely girls. It's a classic name that will age well. Certainly not overly popular. I think that 'Evie' will probably date in a way that 'Evelyn' won't.

In our digital age there is a lot to be said for sticking with classic names. It makes a child less easily Googlable and protects their privacy as they go throughout life.

Saharafordessert · 21/03/2019 13:29

You chose the name originally so you must have loved it then.
Why are you letting yourself be influenced by strangers on the internet?

Marlena1 · 21/03/2019 13:26

I called my daughter Sophie and the amount of times here I've seen negative comments about itHmmbut we like it and it's not changing. FWIW I love Evelyn.

glitterbiscuits · 21/03/2019 13:23

I was looking forward to opening this thread and discovering that your DC was called something hideous
But Evelyn is fine. Please don't give it another negative thought.

NutElla5x · 21/03/2019 13:20

I take it you are not 44 as your name might suggest op because you come across as very very immature. Who gives a flying fuck what anyone on here or anyone else thinks of your daughters name? In fact it worries me slightly because surely, seeing as your daughter is 3 years old.the name is now part of her so how could you possibly not love it? Are you so easily influenced in all areas of your life? Because I think that is what you need to change, not your daughter's name.

NorthernRunner · 21/03/2019 13:16

I love that name and was on my shortlist for DD.
For the record I much prefer it to Eliza.

You will never get 100% totally in favour of your choice, you can open a can of worms asking for opinions on here.

I’m sure many people wouldn’t like my dd’s name, but she loves it and as the saying goes, “those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind, don’t matter”

UpsyDaaaisy · 21/03/2019 13:15

At*

UpsyDaaaisy · 21/03/2019 13:15

There's a new mum and mum's and toddlers group by me and her daughter is called Evelyn and I've been thinking what a lovely name it is! She's around 18 months old

pink412 · 21/03/2019 13:14

It’s a lovely name ignore the hates (haters gonna hate)

Topseyt · 21/03/2019 13:14

Oh crikey, don't go setting too much store by stuff you read from random strangers on internet sites.

Evelyn is a lovely, timeless and classic name. I like it. It appeals to me far more than Eliza does as I would always think of Eliza Doolittle.

My daughters all have names that might well be considered too popular on here, as do I probably. I don't give a shit to be honest. If you like the name then use it.

Nobody will like every name. We are all different.

Megan2018 · 21/03/2019 13:14

I know a few little girls called Evelyn - it's not super common but not unheard of. It's a very naice area and I see Evelyn as a similarly naice name.

I like it. It doesn't go well with our surname otherwise it might be on our list.

You like it, you chose it. Who cares what people on a website that you don't even know think?

WaterQuarter · 21/03/2019 13:13

I guarantee if every person here started a thread about their own name it would get a variety of responses:

Classic
Boring
Dull
Beautiful
Okay
Hideous
Lovely
Reminds me of someone who picked her nose and ate it in primary school

No name is universally liked and that is fine! Evelyn is a perfectly nice name and you need to stop worrying about what people on the internet say about it. She's three years old, this is her name for for life. In the nicest and most supportive way possible, get over it. Smile

Elizasmother · 21/03/2019 13:13

She’s the only Eliza I know, so no big flurry around here
