We really like Woody as a able for our baby boy due in July. The kids love the name too. We decided not to tell anyone for fear of negative reaction but my 7 year old told my mum in front of me and her reaction was 'Woody?! That's not even a proper name!' 🙄 It's upset me as I loved it and now I feel silly using it. What do you all think? Our surname starts with W too, I think alliteration is cute but is it too cute? Think, Woody Wilson ..

@resm ha, I can see the embarrassment, perhaps it's just as well we named him Lenny GrinIsaac is a lovely name for a boy, definitely not a dog name!

I have a 4 year old Isaac and neighbours adopted a puppy called Isaac. Was very embarrassing when he answered them through the hedge when they were calling the dog. Lenny is cute - congrats again :)

Oh I'd forgotten this thread! Baby boy is now a 17 month old Lennon, nn Lenny. Next door has just named their new puppy Woody and I had a pant of regret for a lovely cute name!

Did you go with Woody in the end OP? Lovely options of Edward on BC etc if you still loved it enough to use as a nickname?

@MakeAWhish I think it's a super cute name and I didn't know it meant erection must be a super old school thing - I don't think any younger people would associate it with that

I think it’s cool! Perfectly fine for a boy and a man on its own. I wouldn’t have any negative connotations. There are thousands of things kids tease others over and it’s just luck as to whether it happens.

An alternative ‘long’ name could be Herewood which I think is lovely (I know one)

Maybe change your middle name or partners name to Woody to get it out of your system.

I love Woody too but it's slang for an erection - still very much used where I'm from! 😔

I definitely thought Woodrow Wilson first, which is pretty dignified, but then also Woody Allen is not so great ... plus obviously erections!

I know two Woodys. One is Woodrow (as in Woodrow Wilson, WW1 president) and I'm not sure about the other. It's a great name.

I'm the age when 'Woody' reminds me of my favourite Bay City Roller (Stuart Wood).

So, I definitely think of it as a nickname for someone whose surname is Wood.

There are name websites where you can search for names containing, so I'd search for boys' names containing wood, would, woud and ward.

I teach a 6y boy called woody.
Thought it was unusual when he started in eyfs. Now though it's just his name. None of the other children have ever commented. Mind, that class has a few children with more unusual names.
