Thoughts on the name Amélie?

What do you think of Amélie? I love the nickname Mimi.

Every time there is a thread about this name it winds me up. I don't have an Amelie so I'm not being defensive but I seriously think people should refer to the stats when claiming a name is 'so popular'.

It was number 72 in the 2018 rankings. I hardly think that is crazy popular!

Amelie was 88/100 in the 2018 list of baby names so I don’t think it can be that common!! I kind of wish it was a bit more common as lots of people don’t know how to pronounce it when they meet DD (12). There was one other Amelie in her primary school and there are 2 others in her (1000+) senior school. Go with something you like op. It was the stand out name for DH and I and DD loves it.

I used to think it was a lovely name but now think it’s bland, unimaginative and dull as it’s incredibly popular and overused in my area which is a shame.

I like it but I'm not familiar with current trends. I like a lot of French names - also Anais, Elodie, Mirreillle, Merisna. But I'm a bit pretentious.

Quite like it. Though would probably get shortened to Ammy, Am, Or Milly/Melly, rather than Mimi.

I think it's too similar to the nice but over used Emily.
And Mimi doesn't come naturally to an English speaker. I'm afraid they are usually shortened to Am.

I love it, such a pretty name and suitable for all ages.
I knew a girl from a French speaking family whose nn was Mimi from Anne Marie. I think Mimi is an ok nn for Amelie.

My Amelie naturally became Ammy, although i never intended to shorten it. She's five and the only one in her year as far as I know (big school, 120 kids per year group). I still love her name, it's so pretty. Her twin is Rosa.

I wanted it for DD, however DHs step sister called her daughter Amelia a few months before DD was born 🙈

I don't think it's that regional. I'm in NZ and even I think it's 'done'.

I don't actually know a single one, but it's still part of their Emilia/Amelia overdone cohort of names.

It feels a little 90s as well, as isn't that when the movie came out.

Names like Camille and Naomi would also give you Mimi for short.

I’m from a French family (although I don’t actually speak French myself) so it’s not too much of a stretch. Although people say it’s popular, the stats seem to show it’s quite far down the top 100 - maybe it’s very popular in certain areas and not in others.

It's not 'common' in my opinion and it's a lovely name. Also my nn is Mimi (I'm almost 30) and it generally gets lots of compliments!

A bit twee and bland and rather downmarket. Unless you’re French. Amelia or Emily are better.

In my accent it sounds like Ahmelly to rhyme with smelly/jelly?

It's ok. French name. Possibly a little weak for my liking.
