Not pregnant just thinking of some possible names for the future. Our baby girl already has a gaelic animal name so I quite fancy if we are blessed with another to carry on the theme!

Cuilean- gaelic for puppy/cub
Pronounced- kwi-lee-an

I know a child who's called Cuillin (or something like it, that's how it's pronounced anyway?). I don't like it tbh, sounds like "culling".

Cuilean is more Quilyan than the pronunciation you have spelled, OP.

How about Ferdia for a future boy?
Or Colm - means dove.

CúChulainn would be as bad as Colmcille, which exH wanted to call a second DS if we had had one.

I think it's the combo of it being two words and the fact it's his 'superhero' name rather than his real name. Plus it's a lot to live up to!

Let's just say my head would whip round for a gawk if I heard someone calling out to a Cú Chulainn in the supermarket! Grin

Cuileann is Irish for holly - as in the sprigs you put up at Christmas.

I've heard of Cooleen for a girl
But that seems to be anglicised for Cúilín - which means a little goal. Wtaf

Or the wonderfully named Smugairle Rón, the Irish for jellyfish. Translates as 'seal snot'. Ok, maybe not that one...

Unless you actually live in a place that speaks Irish/Scots you are dooming your child to a world where no one can pronounce their name.

OP go for it. Are you Irish/Scots? The only problem I can see is learning English if not learning Gaelic - trying to explain the mysteries of Gaelic spelling and pronunciation to fellow pupils, teachers and your own children.

I'd more pronounce it quill-inn. I know a little Cuilean and that's how he pronounces it. I think it's a lovely name!

We already have a Fiadh which means deer in gaelic and pronounced Fee-ah. I love the idea of another gaelic animal name! Won't be needing one any time soon tho lol! My little deer is still a baby

Cuan (can’t remember how to do fada on iPhone) is another, someone in our family is called this and there are a few around. Means little wolf. Coo awn depending on accent
