Luca, Luka or Lucca?

IrishCypriot · 16/03/2019 07:44

How would you spell it?

I like C, DH likes K, we are thinking CC spelling as a compromise.

Thoughts? Is it a nice name?

I agree with the pp who have said that if you can have Luca then you can have Lucas. They will both be commented on so you may as well use the name that you both love rather than quibbling on spellings of a pale imitation Smile

Edenember · 24/03/2021 17:56

Luca

partyatthepalace · 24/03/2021 13:29

Luca is the Italian spelling and the one most often used in UK and US - go with that, or it will be an absolute pain for him to have a younique spelling, especially as Luca is getting quite popular.

If you like Lucas but can't use there is Linus.

Geamhradh · 24/03/2021 12:41

Luca, but then I'm in Italy and surrounded by them. It's very very popular.
I really like Lucas, but find Luke a bit boring.
Lucca (pronounced similarly to Luca but not identical, a double consonant strengthens the pronunciation of that consonant and shortens the preceding vowel) is a no-no.

PandaFluff · 24/03/2021 12:30

If Lucas will get comparisons are you sure Luca won't?

I'd go Luca if you don't like Luka.

IAcceptCookies · 24/03/2021 12:28

It's a lovely name, and I personally would have no particular preference about a 'c' or 'k' spelling.
Not keen on the 'cc' though.

TatianaBis · 24/03/2021 12:05

Lucca is pronounced the same as Luca.

There are other Italian city names - Florence, Sienna, Milan (actually a Slavic name), Roman, but I don't see what's wrong with Luca.

PandaFluff · 24/03/2021 10:22

@PlasticPatty

For heaven's sake, no. Not any of those.
Bit rude
PandaFluff · 24/03/2021 10:21

Luka looks "right" to me but again that's because of Eastern European heritage.

Blahblah3 · 24/03/2021 10:05

It's ooka sound now ucka sound 🙄

IrishCypriot · 16/03/2019 19:31

Thanks everyone!

I shall be showing this thread to DH in the hopes it convinces him to settle on the C spelling.

We have a Greek surname which always requires spelling out, so I will try and convince him that our kid will constantly be saying 'Luka with a K' as well as spelling our surname to people. I guess I just feel like, at least to me and the people I know, C is the most logical spelling that no one would second guess.

We have ages yet anyway - only 20 weeks! - excitement has just gotten the better of us x

I’m from a Polish family, so “Luka” looks more “correct” to my eyes.

BlueMerchant · 16/03/2019 14:26

Luca. Big NO to the other spellings.

AnnaSparks · 16/03/2019 14:23

Luca is more Italian, Luka more Eastern European, and Lucca just seems wrong.

Lovely name!

DramaAlpaca · 16/03/2019 13:15

Luca.

HappyDinosaur · 16/03/2019 12:53

I definitely think Luca is the best.

Shadow1234 · 16/03/2019 12:50

Luca

lljkk · 16/03/2019 12:34

For whatever reasons you think Lucas is out, then Luca should be out too. There's no difference in those names (imho).
I find Luke fine but I can't warm to Luc(c)/ka or Lucas.

Icklepup · 16/03/2019 11:31

Luca

IrishCypriot · 16/03/2019 10:33

Thanks all.

I have explained the K spelling and that we don't have connections so to me it seems weird. I knew some Lukas' at school from Germany and Hungary.

We both actually prefer Lucas, but unfortunately that name has already been taken in our family and although it's a loose connection, it will get mentioned and we don't want that. Consequently, we've actually fallen more in love with Luca - well, I have at least.

Not Italian heritage but Greek, so i figured Louca isn't too far off Luca. Really not keen on the Greek spelling for some reason

Luca. Although have you thought about Lucas? I always think Luca is a bit odd if you have no Italian connection, but that's just me so just ignore me

Wolfiefan · 16/03/2019 09:05

I agree with jiggsy.

TheFrogsLegs · 16/03/2019 09:02

Luca

Arowana · 16/03/2019 09:01

Definitely Luca

happytobemrsg · 16/03/2019 08:59

Definitely Luca
