Temperance

I am in love with this name for DD2. However, we already have a Constance, and I’m worried the two virtue names would make us sound like a harsh, Puritanical family! Thoughts? Also what are people’s thoughts on Temperance in general?

My alternative names are Cecily, Coralie, Nancy.

I worry about virtue names being something for a person to live up to. Some are now so accepted as names that we forget they are virtues, like Grace or Verity - they're not much talked of in general society except as names. Constance too is in that category. I'm not sure that Temperance is: it's still a working noun, if you see what I mean. For that reason, I think I would exercise my own temperance and choose something less loaded.

Bones fan?

I wouldn’t like to be called temperance, your other names are nicer.

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 15/03/2019 12:07

No, sorry, you can't do that. Not only the potential for bad shortenings - constance (or constancy) is considered a positive virtue, temperance has much more of the (as you yourself said) puritanical about it.

I love Cecily, and I don't think it matters that they'll have the same initial (it makes a different sound, anyway). Just make sure her middle name is a different initial, for post-identifying purposes.

I love it. Tempy for a nn. Too similar to your other dd though.
Now, Nancy and Constance.. They sound fab together :)

Don't like that sort of name. But more to the point, as mentioned above it would be shortened to Temp or Temper which is just awful.

FleeceDetective · 15/03/2019 11:54

I just envisage years of teasing over her temper.

MummySharkBabyShark · 15/03/2019 11:52

Love it

Gobletoffire · 15/03/2019 11:41

I think Nancy would be a nice fit. Constance and Temperance sound a little too much together.

MercyBodle · 15/03/2019 11:37

I like Temperance too but I wouldn't use it with sister Constance - way too themey for me! I do like Cecily and Nancy though. Coralie is horrible.

CabbageHippy · 15/03/2019 11:30

would be shortened to Temper by other lovely children
