Temperance

I am in love with this name for DD2. However, we already have a Constance, and I’m worried the two virtue names would make us sound like a harsh, Puritanical family! Thoughts? Also what are people’s thoughts on Temperance in general?

My alternative names are Cecily, Coralie, Nancy.

Sorry I’m not keen. Love Nancy and Cecily though!

SkippingPages · 17/03/2019 20:09

Prudence?

PCohle · 17/03/2019 20:01

Way too themed with Constance.

And would get irritating every time someone made a joke when she had a drink in her hand as a adult.

HollowTalk · 17/03/2019 20:00

It sounds like the sort of name that Jacob Rees Mogg would give to one of his children.

Quintella · 17/03/2019 19:57

Temperance and her pals having fun at Freshers' Week

Temperance
Quintella · 17/03/2019 19:56

but that's the association a lot of people will have.

daisypond · 17/03/2019 19:49

But the name Grace has nothing to do with physical gracefulness. It's linked to graciousness/kindness/mercy, etc.

SumAndSubstance · 17/03/2019 19:47

I don't mind a good virtue name, but Temperance is a very specific one and not high on my list. It could cause a laugh during Freshers' Week, I suppose!

clary · 17/03/2019 19:32

haha I would never have named my daughter Grace as I am such a clumsy clot (tho Dd is actually a very graceful dancer!)

I agree op, what if she turns out to be a paaarty animal? Constance is lovely, and I also like Nancy and Cecily, I would choose one of those myself. Constance is less seen as a "virtue" name now, often shortened to Connie (we know a couple).

SweetbutaPsycho · 17/03/2019 19:14

Sorry I have to agree temperance and constance as a sibling set seem a bit much. Love Cecily though

stellarfox · 16/03/2019 17:29

I think it’s definitely too much with Constance! I’d pick something else

RaffertyFair · 16/03/2019 14:46

Why would you want to name your child abstinence from alcoholic drink Confused

mrsdavys · 16/03/2019 14:35

I wouldn’t use it with Constance as I also thought of the Puritan thing.
What about clemency if you like that kind of name? It’s not as harsh as Temperence

FogCutter · 16/03/2019 06:32

Constance and Temperance are just too much together, you would sound like a very Puritan family!

Plus the nickname/ shortened versions of temperance are not nice.

Love your other names though!

Ouchmytoe · 16/03/2019 05:55

Omg!!! That's meant to say it wouldn't SUIT a baby! Not 'shit'! How embarrassing!

Ouchmytoe · 16/03/2019 05:51

Sorry OP... I really hate it. I can't think of anything nice to say about it. It wouldn't shit a baby, toddler, child, teen, young adult, middle aged person... I don't think it would even suit an elderly person unless they were very very stern and strict and a bit scary. Even the nicknames are awful - tempy? Temper? Nancy is lovely! Your child won't thank you for a name like Temperance but I think I'd be really happy to name named Nancy, it's a really cool name!

Birdie6 · 16/03/2019 01:51

It sounds like something out of Sister Wives. If her sister wasn't Constance it might be OK but even then, it's got a "puritan" feel which would be inappropriate for anyone over the age of 12.

LaurenOrdering · 16/03/2019 01:48

I can see your misgivings but your baby, your choice of names.
Me personally I would chose Nancy.
I also like Hope, Faith & Honor.
Actually I think Constance & Honor fit together well.
Ooh I also know of a Merrily (lovely girl) that's a name that would fit with the theme.

YouBumder · 16/03/2019 01:41

Awful, sorry.

PinkieTuscadero · 16/03/2019 01:37

'To Temperance' was my late grandfather's favourite toast when he had a drink.

Grin
PinkieTuscadero · 16/03/2019 01:36

Call her Temperance and she's bound to be a lush.

I'm not a fan of virtue names at the best of times but Constance and Temperance together and I'd presume you were Mennonites, and wonder to myself if you had other offspring called Fear-God or Repentance.

Coralie is lovely however!

bitheby · 16/03/2019 00:08

John Penry lived near where I live.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Penry

He called his four daughters Deliverance, Comfort, Safety and Sure-Hope.

I don't think you're quite in his league yet.

PuzzlingPuzzle · 15/03/2019 23:53

Awful. All I think about is the temperance movement and prohibition. I love Nancy and Cecily from your list though.

LordPickle · 15/03/2019 23:48

Hideous. Is your child a Victorian orphan?

MumUnderTheMoon · 15/03/2019 23:32

I love the name Temperance it's one of my favourites but I see what you mean about theme names. There are other virtue names that I'm not sure are so obvious like Blithe, Dharma and Glory. Other names on my list were Tabitha, Astrid, Francesca, Persephone, Meredith and Parker.
