Hi! Looking for some help, my husband and I love love LOVE the sound of the name Eilidh, I am part Scottish, however we live in England. It is pronounced ay-lee, I guess Hayley without the H. The spelling I can see being a issue here though. We like the look of both Aylie and Ailey, but want to know which is best? Do you prefer Ailey or Aylie? Thank you :)

Stick to the original spelling.
Ailye, Ailey, Ailie etc look made up and will still cause problems.

dream28 · 10/12/2022 11:38

How about archiving old theads?

MyNameSucks · 09/12/2022 21:53

My name is Eilidh and lots of people spell it that way prob cause i live in scotland but eilidh is gaelic which i actully got bullied for in school so ye i hate my name and my birthday which is jan 1st and NO WHERE is opened so ye my life sucks

DidYeeAye · 14/03/2019 14:47

Stick with Eilidh. The other spellings seem strange! I am scottish though so it's maybe because I'm so used to seeing/hearing Eilidh

BeGoodTanya · 14/03/2019 11:43

Eilidh isn't Irish, Bertrand -- you might be thinking of Eilis or Eilís?

florascotia2 · 14/03/2019 11:39

OP I don't know where you live in England, but in Scotland Eilidh is very popular - it was among the top 20 names in 2018. The spelling and is well known by now, I think.

It's a pretty name. This may not be relevant, and I'm sure you know it anyway, but Eilidh is the Gaelic version of Eleanor/Ellie and is also sometimes used as a Gaelic version of Helen. Unlike Bridget (another nice name that you say you like) it's not Gaelic/'Celtic' in origin - Eleanor originated in southern France, Helen originated in ancient Greece.

BertrandRussell · 14/03/2019 09:37

I think it’s pronounced differently Scots and Irish Gaelic anyway.

Remember that she will probably have spelling and pronounciation issues with it all her life- think about whether you want that.

SoupDragon · 14/03/2019 09:00

Go with Eilidh.

I think that you'd end up with spelling and probably pronunciation issues with any alternative spelling anyway.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 14/03/2019 08:57

I know an Ailidh, but I don't think that would solve any spelling issues.

Thewheelsarefallingoff · 14/03/2019 08:56

Ds1 had an Eilidh in his class in East Anglia, never caused problems. It is a lovely name, leave as it is.

BertrandRussell · 14/03/2019 08:56

Ailie is there usual Anglicization isn’t it?

MrsR1993 · 14/03/2019 08:53

No, no, my username was LMR93 but I changed it to MrsR1993 as I didn't know if having my initials and year of birth was a good idea for a username after people started commenting and I noticed they have more unusual usernames, I assumed it would change the username at the top of the post to the new username but it didn't quite work out that way😂

FamilyOfAliens · 14/03/2019 08:49

OP, have you had a name change fail?

YogaPants · 14/03/2019 08:45

Eilidh Bridget.

Very nice.

HotpotLawyer · 14/03/2019 08:45

I am English and have no difficulty with Scottish names after I have been told once,

The trad spelling is by far the best.

Plenty of people manage the names of malt whiskies, do they not?

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/03/2019 08:41

I love the original spelling with Bridget. I would have to learn the spelling but I know how to pronounce it (there's an athlete with this name).

PhilipJennings · 14/03/2019 08:40

I knew someone named Ailidh when I was little, if that spelling doesn't offend you too much!

I like Brigid but I think with Eilidh a single syllable might work well. Would you consider Bríd or Briege? Keeping the Scots/Gaelic aspect of the name?

xyzandabc · 14/03/2019 08:36

I have an Eilidh in England. Have to say, we're 13 years in to it and people don't learn to spell it! Teachers are fine, siblings are fine, Scottish grandparents are fine, best friend is fine but beyond that it's a bit of a lottery (even English grandparents don't get it right every time).

We all like it though and wouldn't change it. I also have a name that can be spelt different ways so it really doesn't bother us or her. Spelling it with an A looks a bit like you wanted Hayley but are trying to be different.

Also chances are there won't be another one in the school so if you say Eilidh, everyone knows who you're referring to.

3out · 14/03/2019 08:33

Eilidh and Bridget would be lovely sisters’ names. I wouldn’t overly stress about a middle name because it will be used so infrequently. Just try to avoid names which might spell out others when initialled (Felicity Ursula Caroline Kirkness for example, won’t look good on your child’s painting at primary school. Or was it just our Primary that asked you to initial everything?)

BeGoodTanya · 14/03/2019 08:31

Another saying stick with the real spelling. I’m Irish living in England and hate the anglicised Neeves and Chevonnes. I have an Irish name and surname, and DS has an unusual Irish first name and two Irish surnames, and people manage.

widgetbeana · 14/03/2019 08:27

I like Eilidh Rose. But it might be too many Rs if the surname is an r too.

I think it needs to be a name that doesn't start with a vowel and doesn't end with an 'e' sound. Which is why Bridget works! I am struggling with an others, but I am a bit sleep deprived!

MrsR1993 · 14/03/2019 08:23

Honestly, thank you all for the help!
As I am part Scottish, I find the Eilidh spelling the most 'normal' but it was my husband mainly who was stressing over the spelling, so it is good I can now show him the traditional spelling will be okay here :) Also, sorry for being a pain in the backside, but could I also ask another question, what middle name would you put with Eilidh? As I've said above we do also like the name Bridget but don't think we are brave enough to use it as a first name😂 So my question is does Eilidh Bridget flow nicely, or it be better to use Eilidh now with another middle name and save Bridget for if we have a second girl in the future? Actually I think Eilidh and Bridget sounds really nice for sisters Grin. Oh if it helps with middle name ideas, her last name will begin with R so it'll be Eilidh R❤

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 14/03/2019 08:04

Please do the original spelling. The others scream "my parents wanted a name but didn't know how to spell it".

3out · 14/03/2019 07:59

I may have a weirdly too strong opinion on this, but the ‘A’ spelling is hurting my eyes and head, it’s like nails on a blackboard for me!

BlueMerchant · 14/03/2019 07:53

Eilidh Bridget is by far the best.
Other spellings make it look made-up and 'cheap'. Bridget is lovely.
