Names you dislike/don't get?

I have always disliked girls' names that are feminine versions of male names, eg Paula, Pauline, Nicola, Georgina, Freda, Henrietta, Josephine etc. I make an exception for Stephanie, which I love.

I also generally dislike the sound of names with two syllables, especially where the first syllable is long and stressed, eg Eileen, Maureen, Doreen, Julie, Jodie, Eunice, and Irene (which I love when pronounced with 3 syllables). I love Sarah though, and quite like Laura, so am not consistent.

Oh I'm not being sensitive OP... I totally understand that not all names are to everyone's liking and there's definitely some that I personally don't quite get the love for. My own name has been mentioned too & doesn't bother me in the slightest - I like it & it's done me no harm. However, to be called a moron for naming my child something that I obviously love & put great thought into is totally uncalled for. That poster needs to understand & appreciate different peoples opinions, not me.

Agree with a lot. Nicknames/shortened versions...just give the full name and allow the child choice as they get older how they are known.

I discovered that I hate pretty much every name DH niece (4years younger than me) likes... suspect she'd say the same in return.

I do love some of the old testament names, but DH vetoed most of them because he'd never be able to spell them 😂

I like traditional names, although not the blah ones like Jack or George.

Also hate Fiona, Isla, Stacey, Becky...but think that may be personal association.

My name's been mentioned. Absolutely fine with that.

Do people mind more if their child's name has been dissed? I suppose that's a double 'attack' (in the mildest sense) as it's attacking your taste in names as well as your child who bears that name

I think Mildred is awful. Bet there's a hipster couple somewhere in North London who've given their poor daughter that name.

Insulting people who might choose any name is a bit out of order. It's fine not to like someone's name but no need to be a dick about it.

No name is going to be universally liked and none is going to be universally disliked. This isn't comparable to a thread like "what foods don't you like?" or "which tv programmes don't you like?" because those are not so intensely personal.

I have posted on a thread like this in the past and now I regret it and feel bad about that.

Boys called Jesse, it just seems like the equivalent of calling a girl Gertrude.

Skye - it's for pets at best.

I also roll my eyes at Isobel/Isabella despite it being the middle name of my own DD!

Connor and Callum I just have this intense dislike for both.

I prefer both of those spelt the more traditional way, with a single consonant in the middle.

I don't like unisex names either.

I agree bibbety.... according to this thread I'm a moron for the name I gave my DC. I don't feel the need to justify myself but it's a perfectly normal, popular name with a nice family link - far from moronic!

Unisex names.. I have one myself and I have spend years explaining that no it is NOT Mr.. I dont care what your computer says I know I am NOT Mr... Also here on MN every time a unisex name is suggested here there are people going " no dont do it I have a unisex name and I hate it" yet the poster always go " no no i want a strong name".. unisex doesnt = strong.

I've always disliked Peter, just as a collection of sounds - I can't put my finger on any other reason why. The first one I ever knew was a perfectly normal, not particularly memorable boy at school, so I don't think it was anything to do with him. Since then I've known nice and nasty ones, but none that were spectactuarly evil or anything. I dislike Kelly as a collection of sounds too but quite like Kerry - what a difference a change of consonant makes!

Not one I would ever use anyway for cultural reasons, but I don't like the Sikh name Surinder because it makes me think of the word "syringe" and then, by extension, of earwax!

I've never met one in real life, but why on earth do some people think "Brie" is a suitable name for a person? It's cheese!

Jade and Nigel because nearly everyone I've known with those names has been horrible. It's possible I would change my mind about those if I knew nicer ones as it's definitely the association, rather than the names themselves.

And unlike some people here I really like Jane, Ruth and Matthew.

So many! Names that I dislike for no rational reason other than just not liking the sound of them: Martha, Lucas, Jake, Mary, Ursula, Nicholas.

Names that I dislike because I once knew horrible people with those names: Kirsty, Donna, Matthew, Sally, Kelly, Russell, Richard. Shame about some of them, because they're perfectly nice names in their own right.

For me Derrek is the worst, but that’s because it’s my uncles name and he is the biggest prick you will come across

I also dislike Luke. It's like 'oh, he's not cool and he's not hot' it literally sounds luke warm, which is a pretty negative sounding describing word. Luke warm soup.

Evelyn. It's perfectly inoffensive, I am just utterly bemused by the sudden intense love for it.

Surname names, esp for girls.

'Nicknames' being set before the child is born, especially when they don't grow organically out of the actual name. I see it a lot on here. (But tbh I don't like short forms given as full names either, so people who do clearly can't win in my book).

Morag's not nice on its own, but I really like it in Katie Morag.

Simon. Every Simon I met was an arse. Topped by next door neighbour who was beating his wife 😡

Luxkily, I don’t care what other people think. I love my children’s names and wouldn’t change them.

I’m not 100% keen on mine but it’s mine so I will live with it

Jake. I'm a teacher and yet to meet a nice, well behaved Jake.
